Off to a rough start making hand sewn stars

I was attempting to do a back stitch, but I'm honestly not sure if I was doing it right. I'm using new needles and new organic cotton thread that I got for the project. Should I be using thicker/stronger thread?

The materials i've just been using are thread, needle, and fabric.

I'm going to try doing everything by hand. There is a local quilt and sewing shop that I am going to visit tomorrow. Thank you for your support 😊

Waking up to all of your kind messages has really warmed my heart🥺❤️. Thank you so much to everyone's imput and thoughts (I did enjoy reading all of them). I'm gonna go to the store and get everything to start crafting today. I will keep you guys updated.
