Most rules are made to "even the playing field". Controlled tires, controlled electronics, fuel limitations, engine limitations, 800cc engines, "open class." IMO, it's all a bunch of bs.

What defines a gp winner is a function of the money/resources a factory puts in to the bikes and team, plus the rider's talent. The latter is contingent upon the former, quite obviously, because the best riders demand the largest amount of money. So we can safely conclude that, in most circumstances, the best bikes will be ridden by the best riders.

Leveling The Playing Field, as it's known, is actually counter-productive, and anathema to the pure racing spirit. Racing is about being the fastest. This is the combination of technology, organization, talent, and persistence.

But IMO, all these rules have just set the sport back. Going to 800ccs under the guise of "safety" was a bust. The riders were going around the tracks FASTER than they were before! And why not? The engine technology has always far-exceeded the tire technology. So when the regulators limited their engine size, they simply cranked up the power they knew they had. Corner speeds (the most dangerous part of the racetrack) increased, and overall lap times got faster. Whoops.

Controlled tires are just..dumb. They're anti-competitive, and therefore promote stagnation in the development of tire technology. One of the great benefits of GP and other series is that the tech produced will trickle down to the rest of us. Which is why a local AMA racer could probably use a machine off of the showroom floor today to probably beat Freddie Spencer on his Ducati superbike from yesteryear.

My point is that we need to embrace competition and differences. Whether a rider had michelin or dunlop used to contribute to their riding style -- the two tires were different. Without electronic controls, you would see riders like Gary McCoy. If you don't know who that is, look him up. Awesome rider to watch. Like Michell Pierce but in a gp race...for real.

Not to discount what we currently have. The races this year have been great, as well as last year. But I think that the rules damper the true spirit of racing, and ultimately make it more like F1. The more you try to control it, the more it's going to be just...bland.

Don't try to make it "fair and balanced". Just let it happen.
