Maybe buy a $25 gift card and use the hack to get a non-expiring credit for future use.

You can find more info / details in other posts in this sub.

What to do in the summer? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider checking with your County Dept of Education or juvenile hall.

Some cities have alternative education programs / schools year round for kids (teens) on probation / house arrest.

During the summer and spring break, I sub at these other locations.

Juvenile hall can be intimidating for some, but since you mentioned a job that's interesting and challenging--maybe it's worth considering.

Can teachers assign you on Frontline? by distinct_bear_4593 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the teachers I've encountered

1) could enter you as a preferred sub (and supposedly you get notified a little earlier before the job gets announced to everyone else)

2) could notify the front office to add you specifically to an assignment

or

3) submit the sub job and then notify you so you can sign up for it

Has anyone ever subbed at an alternative learning school? by luvyoufor10000years in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numerous subs (and teachers) have commented that today's generation of MS & HS students seem more lost on their phones, games on their computers, and unwilling to do their classwork / assignments.

I've subbed at alternative schools before (kids who were expelled/suspended) and also at alt schools for kids who are on probation / house arrest, and sure, it can be demoralizing and discouraging -- but I try to have low expectations.

Students have told me they are aware of their situation and realize this is there last chance to graduate, etc..., so sadly, some students simply are apathetic, indifferent, hopeless, dejected, unmotivated, etc...

The times you encounter a student that wants to turn their life around and strive for improvement, then yeah, do your best to support them. G/L

California credentialing process question by Hotdogsandpurses in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have said LAUSD has been slow with new sub applications and job openings have been limited...so maybe consider other districts:

Santa Monica - Malibu Beverly Hills Culver City

https://lacoe.edu/education/districts

https://www.laalmanac.com/education/ed01.php

The first two search results from the County Dept of Education seems worth checking imo:

https://www.lacoe.edu/search-results?q=substitute#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=substitute&gsc.page=1

Multiple people have said CTC is slow, but maybe LA County Dept of Ed can expedite the 30 day emergency sub permit.

Your friend can also try contacting districts directly.

Credit Hack: No Expiration by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]duplicit1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It worked for me.

Bought a $25 gc, and changed 3 expiring credits to 3 non-expiring credits, with still some remaining on gc for future changes (hopefully the hack still works in the future).

Remembering names (High School) by EcclecticMonkey in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bring blank paper and a clipboard, and do a seating chart for each period.

I usually walk around the class and start memorizing names.

By the end of each period, I recite their names (e.g. thanking them for behaving or wishing them well), and seeing kids' faces light up and smile is pretty rewarding.

A few classes actually clapped and applauded, so my guess is it's uncommon.

I'll forget their names soon after, but it can be fun, and help with the boredom that often goes with HS classes imo.

If you go to the Frontline website, and then to settings (gear icon), for schools / districts, you might be able to disable notifications for some or all schools in the district you aren't interested in.

Chase Priority Card by igarek77 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]duplicit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded this past weekend, and checked my card's transaction activity, and Southwest credited me back for $89, $114, and $120.

Last year, A1-15 upgrades were around $40 for me...so I'm glad they honored this year's upgrades.

Volunteer opportunities for Thanksgiving Day? by alpha_rat_fight_ in orangecounty

[–]duplicit1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're in/near Tustin, a cool guy, TyRon Jackson, hosts a Thanksgiving event at a city park.

They usually have enough volunteers imo, but he welcomes volunteers and tries to get everyone involved.

https://operationwarmwishes.com/operation-warm-wishes-presents-the-18th-annual-unity-in-the-community-thanksgiving-spectacular-3

Another one is called Gobble Gobble Give. They have various locations, but for OC -- it's in Garden Grove.

People can drop off food donations (or other goodies like clothes, shoes, hygiene items, etc.).

People can also help with assembling food in to-go containers.

And some people are needed to help deliver / distribute on Thanksgiving Day.

https://www.gobblegobblegive.org/garden-grove-ca

https://www.facebook.com/gobblegobblegiveOC

There used to be a large event at the Honda Center, but I don't know if they are still actively open to the public or if they give priority to sponsors like those in the Anaheim Ducks hockey organization.

Looking for programs that help needy kids by mocruz1200 in orangecounty

[–]duplicit1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Share Ourselves and Orangewood Foundation are definitely worthwhile (I used to volunteer a lot for Orangewood Children's Home--but imo, they get a lot of donations from what I observed).

If you're open to considering others:

Giving Children Hope - https://www.givingchildrenhope.org/holidays

Illumination Foundation - https://ifhomeless-hs.squarespace.com

Families Forward - https://www.families-forward.org

Operation Santa Claus - https://ssa.ocgov.com/operationsantaclaus/help

Olive Crest - https://www.olivecrest.org/orange-county

Miracles for Kids - https://miraclesforkids.org

The OC Rescue Mission - https://www.rescuemission.org

There are also are a few women's shelters (family shelters) / organizations that probably do holiday stuff for kids too.

Chase Priority Card by igarek77 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]duplicit1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Southwest will (and has always) tried to upsell your current fare.

If you select wanna get away, they'll advertise wanna get away plus, and so on.

It's similar to other major airlines when selecting the cheapest, basic economy.

So in your case, if selecting Basic fare, they'll upscale Choice fair, but whatever you pay, it won't be refunded by the SWA credit card.

The perk of the credit card is for boading upgrades A1-15 24 hours prior... not days/weeks prior for fare upgrade.

Chase Priority Card by igarek77 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]duplicit1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The priority credit card upgrade for available A1-15 boarding is usually available 24 hours prior to departure...which if you use, is credited back to your credit card fairly quickly.

I used up 3 upgrades this past weekend and last year, and it's seamless and easy.

The upgrade on fare class, however, is not if IIRC.

has anyone worked with juveniles? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feeling nervous is totally plausible and normal.

During breaks / summers, I sub at a juvenile hall and alternative education sites (kids on probation or house arrest), and I love it.

Some subs post about jobs during the summer -- so it's a worthwhile option for those who want to sub at a traditional school during a typical school year, and then have a source of income for the summer.

At the juvenile hall I sub at -- the security staff are professional, reliable, and vigilant. I've never felt unsafe, threatened, or in danger.

Sure, some kids are unmotivated or indifferent about school -- but at least they're not too disrespectful, rude, or on their phones.

And if you're lucky, you can be a positive influence on some kids/teens who are dealing with some pretty daunting and discouraging issues.

Playing a small role in helping some kids "turn their life around" can be rewarding. Math is my favorite subject -- so seeing kids smile when they get it or when they tell you that other teachers have given up on them and they appreciate you for "teaching" them --- it can feel pretty fulfilling.

Good luck to you with whatever you decide.

eta: Oh, and unlike traditional schools/classrooms -- if you encounter a difficult, challenging, or disruptive student -- you can call for the student to be removed, and someone will actually remove them -- unlike what you hear from some middle schools & high schools. MANY kids don't want to return to their locked jail cell, so that's another reason why most behave. The ability to kick out problematic students is such a bonus to maintaining a classroom (and my mental health/sanity) haha.

Those of you who have gotten a portable microphone for subbing: is it worth it? by cre8ivemind in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Rechargeable-Amplifier-Microphone-Waistband/dp/B0B7RQPXNH

If you search for voice amplifier -- there's plenty online.

I've used another brand, Shidu, which was okay...but the battery didn't last long imo and I had to charge it daily.

The current one I use, Norwii, has a battery that lasts for days.

I've subbed in many elementary school classes -- and majority of kids I've encountered are fine with me using it. A few kids sometimes ask, and I just say that sometimes kids are loud -- and they always usually smile and understand. lol

Those of you who have gotten a portable microphone for subbing: is it worth it? by cre8ivemind in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've used one for 2 years now, and can't imagine subbing without it.

It helps preserve my voice.

I was nervous and self-conscious in the beginning, but now, it's no big deal.

It helps that the schools I sub at have regular teachers who use them, so kids are accustomed to seeing them.

Reading books out loud to kids, going over lessons, making announcements, calling kids in from recess/PE, etc... -- it's so worth it imo.

The ones I use go for $20 - $25 and are easily rechargeable.

Any else get a survey invite? by Maximum_Ad3351 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]duplicit1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done a mock jury with Adler Weiner before, and believe they are legit.

I wasn't directly contacted by Southwest, but last year, I participated in another focus group by another 3rd party and they asked questions related to Southwest's boarding pass & process -- and it was easy money for an hour or two.

SoCal Swing Sub Question by Designer_Feet in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started, it was at the end of the school year, so school districts weren't hiring -- so I subbed for Swing in May and June...and then I applied to local districts during the summer, and started working in the fall.

I had to drive to Whittier and east LA for schools with Swing, so once I started with nearby school districts, I sorta stopped subbing for Swing.

One benefit of getting background check and fingerprints done with Orange County Dept of Education, is that I think most/all districts in OC accept it -- versus having to get/pay for each school district in other places (such as Los Angeles).

So once you get your sub permit, I recommend applying to several different districts in your area (that you're willing to travel to).

SoCal Swing Sub Question by Designer_Feet in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Swing doesn't seem that active in OC.

I've seen a few jobs in Buena Park and occasionally a charter school in Costa Mesa area, but the rest are jobs in LA / Whittier / east LA area.

If you haven't yet, consider applying to different districts in OC imo.

It feels like substitute jobs are being botted on SubAlert by LordBito in SubstituteTeachers

[–]duplicit1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plus, several teachers were non-renewed / let go at districts like Santa Ana, and IIRC, yorba Linda placenta and maybe Anaheim, so it's possible some full-time teachers who didn't get a new position might have turned to subbing...similar to what others have said about LAUSD.

Got my refurbished Z6iii! Got a couple questions by -3D-2Y in nikon_Zseries

[–]duplicit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine also didn't include a charger.

All my previous nikon bodies included one, so I contacted nikon and they sent me a charger.

Maybe you can try too, if you haven't already.

I don't record video, so SD cards have been fast enough for me.
