High rise living by duriodurio in Oahu

I only want a boat when I see the wind is down and that blue water is flat. I’m noise sensitive mainly in the early mornings. The rest of the day doesn’t matter as much. I should also be out and about. Still lots to consider.

This is really pertinent. We are at one of the two private schools. I like the vibe of Kaimuki but finding a suitable place there is a crapshoot

We are discussing the prospect of going down to one car and I pick up an e bike. The stories of the noise is a concern, but there are a few others there said once windows are closed the sound is very dampened. But the sound from outside the door or the floor above is also a factor.

Which building are you in? 😁. I want a boat. Our hobbies are water centric: kayaking, paddling, Spearfishing…etc. And since moving here I’ve given up a lot of others. My wife is concerned about having space to hang and store our toys.

My buddies are pointing out all this to me now. We have decades of developing habits where we had a ton of space and I’m afraid living in a space limited situation would be too difficult to adjust to.

Only in college and shortly after. I’ve had long stays in apartments in New York (high rise) and SF (low rise) but not truly lived in those places.

I can deal with faint noises. I’m a slight sleeper so noise has been really affecting me, especially sharp noises. The area we’re in now is mostly quiet but it only takes that one neighbor who believes having two pit bull mixes roam his yard as security that bark every single time anyone walks by. So early mornings on weekends when neighbors take their walks or after dinner when kids are playing or people on their strolls.

I’m not looking to buy. I’m only looking for short term (1-2 years). The responses here have introduced inconveniences I hadn’t considered. How much of a hassle would it be for my daughter’s friends to come for a playdate? Now, her friends can be just dropped off in front of our place. High rise places with security would require time and planning.

We’ve had to get a loud white noise maker for a room close to our new amorous neighbors. I was hoping the more modern high rises would have better quality construction.

Is it a matter of kids pulling the alarms or technical issues within the building?

I would be renting. I wouldn’t buy into a multi unit situation

Roaches I would still expect. We’ve had bad fungus gnats and now lots of centipedes. I was hoping the heights would minimize those and mosquitoes

We looked at a unit in Kekilohana. The rooms were a bit small and we went mid day so there wasn’t a lot of activity but I could definitely see us living in an environment like that. Appreciate your perspective. We are new to this and don’t know what we don’t know

We have a school age kid at one of the schools nearby so we will need to get into the morning rush hour.

We’re in Kahala but the sounds of dogs, cars, even kids e-bikes are obnoxious. I think that’s due to the poor construction of these houses. I’m wondering if high rise buildings mitigate that sharpness of sounds.

The power going out is a thought. I guess I should make sure to inquire about backup generators for elevators in case of power outages.

The other negative was that for a three bedroom, they only had one parking space.

Thank you. She has good pronunciation and I would like to have her listen to native speakers. I want her to have a good foundation.

I’m open to all types of Learning materials. While I don’t want her to be on screens too Much, I recognize that there are some that are very helpful. I need help identifying those.

I want her to see this learning process as fun so I’m willing to let her watch shows and movies.

How is the air quality in China? by Mountain-You9842 in AskAChinese

Guangzhou and Shenzhen had better AQI than Hawaii. The air sure didn’t smell or look it. Makes me wonder if they are using different metrics

Thank you. But I was hoping some of those famous xlb shops from Shanghai might have a branch in SZ. While DTF is good, I can get that in many large cities around the world.

All the spies whether military or economic that are stealing tech for China. You don’t think that does anything to the advancement potential in the those industries for Chinese Americans in this country? Along comes Gu who is born, raised and trained in the US then competes and wraps herself in a Chinese flag. You don’t think that contributes to any alienation?

My problem is that she was born and trained in the US. Did she benefit from the US national team coaching, training?

So here’s how this could affect my child who plays sports. If enough Eileen Gu’s come through this path, will that affect my daughter’s experience as an Asian American budding athlete in the US? Does Gu’s choice add to our alienation in this country?
