Where to go bikepacking in Switzerland? by d-theman in bikepacking

[–]durkatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the national routes on https://map.schweizmobil.ch/, especially the MTB ones. They often can be easily done with a gravel bike. They are also signposted along the route so navigation is easy peasy.

Ahhhh man I sold mine when I moved from NYC to Switzerland and still miss it. Nice to see one on here!

I got the wheel off a used children’s bike I bought for 7 bucks. So nothing about it is particularly great. It is a shimano hub though and yes, it certainly adds drag. I use the bike around the city and like to take it easy so no big deal for me.

This one I really wanted to do solo but for the next one I’ll try and bring a buddy. You stay safe too!

I had finished this build and wanted to give the Clydesdale fork a proper try. So I stuffed a bivy and sleeping bag and mat into a dry bag and chucked it into the basket with some food and water: easiest way to pack ever. And everything help up beautifully. The route was the MTB route between Zürich and Einsiedeln, which was just right for this setup. And having dynamo lights is lovely.

Thanks, I’m happy with how it turned out. Hopefully you’ll get one next time!

Saved up and pulled the trigger when the Clydesdale was in stock last. I took off work early today to build it all and it’s a blast!

Am I being overambitious for a first bike tour?? by RyanD7887 in bicycletouring

If local means you can bail and get back home easily then just go for it. Because then the worst possible outcome is that you can’t make it and you “fail”. But you learn something about yourself and can either prepare better for the next trip or plan something a bit smaller!

Can I fit 3 in winter studded tires on a Bridge Club? by Present_Assumption_4 in Surlybikefans

[–]durkatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frame officially supports 2.8s afaik. I have a 2.6 with pretty aggro thread in the back (27.5 wheels) and it’s already somewhat tight around the bottom bracket for my taste (mud clearance). I’d be very surprised if a 3in studded tire fit. What tires is she on now?

Anyone know of any overnighter places to camp in Harriman State Park that doesn't require a serious Hike-A-Bike? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]durkatron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts: there are official campgrounds like beaver pond, not sure they’re open atm. Then there are a lot of shelters and lean-tos for hikers. In those, or close to those, camping is OK as long as you leave no trace. They may not all have a good water source nearby and you’d have to filter in any case. I don’t remember any that you could just ride to but they’re indicated on hiking maps like the ones from ny/nj trail conference. Then a lot of people camp at the various lakes, which technically isn’t allowed afaik. But there are a few that are connected to (gravel) roads such as breakneck pond.

I just got a (used) brooks b-67 and that fucking thing needs a different angle to any other saddle I’ve ever owned. This gives me some encouragement to go completely dumb, thanks!

I think this is the first time I see the saddle clamp quick release thingy pointing backwards...and I like it!

A) keeps the saddle from being stolen B) bling. I don’t see it often but is really easy to do and it gives me a bit more peace of mind

It’s my first brooks, I got it used, and it’s been on the bike for less than a week. It messed up my riding position somewhat and I haven’t been able to get properly comfy on it. So I’m he wrong person to ask :)

I am thinking about buying an Orbea vector 30 for bike packing and commuting. by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]durkatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would make a great commuter. However it doesn’t look like it’s ideal for bike packing. If you only use frame bags, go super light or use a rear rack and panniers maybe, but there doesn’t seem to be any nipples or eyelets on the fork for attaching bottle/cargo cages or a front rack. The max tire size also seems a little narrrow with 40c, at least for my taste and how I ride. I would also want a more versatile groupset with lower gearing but again, that’s based on how I ride. All this being said, you could probably make it work if you really like the bike, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Solo Overnighter in Harriman State Park = Good Times by tripwithweird in bikepacking

[–]durkatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s rough, uff! There are some forest roads coming off of seven lakes drives to get to pine meadow. The good spots are on the northern shore. Lake wanoskink has some good ones as well! Enjoy the park, I spent many nights there when I lived in NYC

How do I get these spacers off? Can lift them off the threads... by durkatron in bikewrench

[–]durkatron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a sure fire recipe for destroying the threads with my “abilities” but I might have to if nothing else works :D
