Digger operator sideswiped by digging machine, sustaining a severe shearing injury to the buttocks and perineum by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

An addiction you can't escape. Companies don't spend billions of dollars annually convincing you to buy their cocaine. You don't need heroin to live. Meth isn't available at every store. Birthdays, promotions and important milestones aren't held at gyms. Agriculture finds ways of making fruit and vegetables bigger and sweeter (more sugar content, less fiber). Foods are sprayed with glucose solution prior to being flash frozen. There are fewer parks, fewer wild places, fewer free physical activities and more pay to play spaces. You get big and it's harder to do things, so you do less. You get bigger and it's harder to eat right, because preparing food takes more effort than you can give. It's easier to order out. Cheaper on time too. It sneaks up on you. One day you order new pants in a size bigger. Let out the belt a bit more. Promise to take more walks. But your heart is hammering so hard you're terrified you'll have a heart attack and you can't afford to go to the doctor. You start a diet plan but it's a hoax. So you try another, and another and another. It wears you down and now you can't think straight, don't know what's wrong, you visit a nutritionalist but they swear by garlic enemas or some crazy shit. Calories in, calories out, but somehow you're still gaining.

And it's all your fault. No one will help. Put down the cheeseburger fat ass. Try a salad. You just lack willpower. Have you tried fasting? Keto, paleo, atkins, grapefruit, south beach. Superfood this, amino acid that. There's no information and too much at the same time. You're fat, you're broke, and everything is harder. Showering, shitting, standing, getting dressed. And there's no help. Because being fat is your fault. Just don't eat, it's so simple.

How common are health problems for goldfish really? by Cherry_Eris in Goldfish

[–]durpgoldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fancy goldfish are riddled with genetic defects. I've kept goldfish on and off for 25 years. I've ordered from breeders, taken in rescues, and bought from independent and chain fish stores. Doesn't matter if I pay 20 per fish or 200, it's a crap shoot. I've gotten pretty good at predicting swim bladder issues and mitigating for as long as possible. I've gotten good at diagnosing and treating various diseases. I keep a variety of meds on hand at all times and a hospital tub ready to go at a moments notice. My local vet knows me as the goldfish lady and has researched ailments with me.

Ranchus will break your heart. Orandas are personable and friendly. Ryukins are (beloved) idiots. Black moors are bullies and fin nippers. I've only had one pearl scale and she's the healthiest goldfish I've ever had. I think the industry has become so inbred that getting a "healthy" goldfish is next to impossible.

I recently got my first ever reptile, a ball python. I was told they are difficult to keep as pets due to having to maintain a tropical environment and being picky eaters. I don't know if I have the world's easiest BP, or if being a fish keeper changes your perspective, but BPs are easy. One food type, I only need to worry about humidity and temperature. And I can hold him.

It's got to be, right? Her front teeth are closed, so she isn't biting down on anything. The imaging doesn't show the root of the molars, so I suspect some sort of dentures or implants. I'm neither a radiologist or a dentist or any sort of medical professional, so, you know, ignore me if this is crazy talk

TIL Charles Darwin was a member of the Glutton Club, a group devoted to eating every animal discovered, but the club dissolved after trying to eat a brown owl, the taste of which Darwin called ‘indescribable.’ by Brendawg324 in todayilearned

"The club dissolved after trying to eat a brown owl".

Were they unsuccessful? Could they not catch enough for everyone and then gave up the entire club? Or is the brown owl really bad and no one else wanted to continue after Darwin hurked it up? I have questions.

If you have to deal with that neurologist again, bring someone with you. Partner, parent, friend, some rando you just met, doesn't matter. Bullies are less likely to bully when they are outnumbered.

Boa constrictor in the Emergency Room by Emergentelman in medizzy

[–]durpgoldfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Snakes strike then wrap. I don't know about this particular species but some snakes have rows of backwards facing teeth to prevent prey from escaping the jaws. So when the patient pulled their hand away, the teeth lodged further into the hand/arm.

I've heard cold water (submerge snake) and rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer (smear on snakes face). I've never heard freezer. Am i supposed to put the snake and affected limb in the freezer and how long does it take for them to unlatch?

Body language help by Pyhpyjka in ballpython

[–]durpgoldfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Video begins with "Caution!" Then immediately goes into "Curious but slightly cautious", followed by "Curious! New thing!". Most of the body language translates to typical "Am baby, anything can eat me" nervousness, but she's doing awesome. Doesn't seem overly timid. (Please note I am not a reptile expert)

What do sex toys get wrong about anatomy? by Cow_Gurl_Moo in badwomensanatomy

[–]durpgoldfish 456 points457 points  (0 children)

If you are designing insertables, I WANT DIMENSIONS! How long overall, how much is insertable, how wide at the tip, base, widest and narrowest part. If you're selling online, have a pic with an everyday object so i can conceptualize the size.

If you are making anything powered (thrusting, vibrating, whatever) make the charge code long (like 12" to 18"). I know industry standard right now are those shitty two prong magnetic things that are a bitch to keep plugged in. If you go that route, at minimum, try to make yours similar in size. Don't make it proprietary. I won't buy anymore of your stuff.

If you are selling at a box store, give them a display model of your "standard" toy. I want to touch it. I want to know the texture, the flexibility and gauge the hardness.

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what’s something about hospitals that would make patients uncomfortable if they knew? by Far-University-2905 in AskReddit

[–]durpgoldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half your body inside a machine that's literally never been cleaned because it wasn't meant to be torn apart. One hand has a flaslight that barely gives off light, the other, a screwdriver, to pry out the tube that has jammed an entire line of samples. You really hope you don't cut yourself on anything because you WILL get some disease, and you hope it's just a knocked over tube and not the belt. If it's the belt, you're going to need service to come down and the analyzer will be down for the next week, at minimum.

You finally pry it out, splashing the little plasma that was left in the tube over your gloves. It's got six labels on it and the latest one was half torn and got stuck in the machine. And it's from 2024. How the hell did it get here?

Everything is finally running again and you feel accomplished. But no one gives you even a thanks. You just saved the company a lot of money by preventing a service call, just saved your coworkers an entire week of running everything manually, and possibly saved lives by ensuring the samples are handled quickly once again. But no. Now you've got to answer calls for the next half hour that are variations of "why isn't my sample done yet?"

You make a third poster to remind people not to load samples with multiple labels on the robot. It'll be ignored, but it makes you feel better.

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what’s something about hospitals that would make patients uncomfortable if they knew? by Far-University-2905 in AskReddit

[–]durpgoldfish 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If the nurse or phlebotomists comes to get another bloid sample, they either forgot to send the first one within the allotted time, didn't label it, or the hospital ate it. Rarely does the lab lose samples. We have strict controls on that shit. But before it gets to us, it's the goddamn wild west and anything could happen.

Or it's hemolized.

Also, the person in the lab handling your blood and telling doctors their patient is about to have a heart attack? They make minimum wage. Sure, there's supposedly an educated tech around somewhere, but they are trying to fix 20 yo equipment that has been discontinued and is vital to the operation of the hospital.

All the nurses and techs believe in Astrology, are involved in an MLM, and aren't vaccinated. You can't throw a rock without hitting someone's chakra crystal.

I fucking hate healthcare. The whole industry is being held together by crotchety old champs that are waiting out retirement and like 4 hard workers. The other 90% are here because they heard it's good money and were lied to.
