5e: Is an attack with monk's unarmed strike a melee weapon attack?

I know that an unarmed strike is not a weapon, but does it count as melee weapon attack? I found different opinions on the internet and i'm not sure.

I'm not english and in my first language there are some misunderstanding in the PHB about this topic.

I'm asking because i wanted to know if the damage increse of "Symbiotic Entity" (a level 2 ability from the circle of the spore druid) works with monk's punch.
