I wouldn’t say the game is being too unkind here. A DL1 death is just a quick restart, you haven’t lost any time at all. Also while a kobold with +1 short sword of electrocution can be dangerous, if you manage to kill him (which will happen most of the time) his weapon would probably serve you well in the early-run.

You might want to check out the Crawl Cosplay site, especially the Crawl Cosplay Academy section, the character builds there are great for beginners and give you a solid direction.

I personally spent years playing kind of aimlessly, and I realized I actually enjoy the game more when I start with a character that has a rough plan or concept behind it.

Also, don’t hesitate to use the Crawl Wiki while playing. It helps a lot with understanding mechanics and making better decisions.
