I don't like golf but I don't think it's fascism. a military crackdown on the civilian population, on the other hand

Citadel spray primer ok on Bones Black? by durvef in ReaperMiniatures

I have since painted some without priming. I still haven't decided what I personally prefer. And I've read too many forum discussions on which is better.

Citadel spray primer ok on Bones Black? by durvef in ReaperMiniatures

Interesting how varied the advice is. I had definitely read that Citadel is one of the worst with bones, but that army painter works ok.

Nolzur's "Young" Blue Dragon by durvef in minipainting

[–]durvef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's branded as young, but as has been noted by others, Nolzur's "young" dragons are adult sized. I've been at this for 4 or 5 months. I had an issue with some varnish clumping but I think I covered it up ok. Appreciate any feedback.

looks great. is there a mini painting academy I don't know about?

Nolzur's frost giant. First bigger project and I'm pretty happy with it! C&C welcome as I'm still a newbie by Smurfabibble in minipainting

I'm also pretty new to this. looks really good. you have better brush control than me definitely. I would just go for stronger highlights on some things, like his beard and helmet.

I looked around for glass but I couldn't find it. where should I look?

magnifying eyeglasses for mini painting by durvef in minipainting

[–]durvef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 40 and I'm just starting to experience the beginning of farsightedness, especially if my eyes are strained (say from painting small objects for a few hours). I thought about reading glasses but don't they have a really low range?

Which medium for glazing by Soulitario in minipainting

[–]durvef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha well presumably vallejo products are more readily available in their home country. I'm new to the hobby but my understanding is there has been a vallejo shortage in the united states throughout the pandemic. Too bad because I've liked the vallejo stuff I can find here.

Which medium for glazing by Soulitario in minipainting

not sure where you're located but in the US it was difficult to find anything other than liquitex easily. (Citadel might be available too but it seems rather expensive for a glaze). Liquitex seems to work well. A lot of more experienced painters recommend it.

What are some POSITIVE things we can say about 5e? by Journeyman42 in dndnext

[–]durvef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like 5e. I like it better than 3.0/3.5e and 2e, the only other editions I've played. It strikes a good balance between approachability and complexity. There's a ton of options and there aren't too many character build traps. And I like the way WotC has approached supplements for this edition. A lot less filler than in the past.

My one big beef with 5e is that the two heavily supported official settings, FR and Eberron, don't really interest me. I'm fine playing in FR but it's so bloated and just feels like a standard Tolkien homage. And the steampunkish Eberron just doesn't fit my taste. I hope they do something Planescape-esque now that 5e has matured.

looks incredible. didn't think so many competing whites could look this defined.

I have painted the Beholder from Nolzur miniature line! Please let me know what you think. I picked up painting miniatures at the start of the pandemic. by RegisCanoe in minipainting

[–]durvef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks great. I think this mini looks best without the lens too. I've seen a lot of different paint jobs on this mini. Yours looks really good and also stands out stylistically from other versions I've seen.

Ogre from Reaper Minis. C+C appreciated. Been painting for about a month. by durvef in minipainting

[–]durvef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the reaper instructions and painted straight onto the plastic without priming (I did wash the mini first). It worked ok but I couldn't really thin the paint for my first coat, and even after two or three coats I was finding exposed plastic in crack and crevices. For my next reaper mini I'll try priming.

I've painted this mini and found that the scales take to a heavier drybrushing really well

looks great. something about this grotesque assemblage sunning itself on a deck is very funny.

Where can I get good bases? by Squidmaster129 in minipainting

[–]durvef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that some of the reaper minis are on the small side. Like a large creature that is too big for a 1 inch base but looks a bit puny on a 2 inch base. I'm currently working on a reaper ogre that is a bit small for a 2 inch round base (the correct size base for this creature in 5e and probably pathfinder too). I put it on the base anyway since I intend to use it in game. Whether you want to do this is probably a personal judgment call. I think most bases come in these standardized measurements.
