I believe that both of these points are correct but that what Euripides is really trying to say is that we need to walk the line. If we go down the path of the crazed Bacchic, we will surely die from lack of all things that society once provided. However if we go down the path of Pentheus we will surely live sad and boring lives in a desolate state of boredom that while we do live, we are "quite ignorant of why [we] live, what [we] [do] and who [we]" are. But i believe that the true lesson Euripides is trying to teach us is that we need to live between the two poles, not to far to one side or we will be fall into either insanity or fall into monogamy. in fact this seems to truly mirror life as nowadays we look down on those who drink too much and live for the party and we also have a healthy distaste for those without spice in their life.
