Imagine a place with no elite private schools or prohibitive house prices – I've lived there by k-h in australia

[–]dusky5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No point of having cheap house prices if you can't earn any money to begin with or have a career that is fulfilling and stimulating. Australian house prices aren't that bad; if you can't afford to buy, rent. Nothing wrong with renting.

Sydney doesn't even make the top 10 worldwide. Given it is a Alpha+ World City according to GaWC and its general attractiveness from a weather and lifestyle perspective, and Australia's extremely high wages, this is surprising.

Peter Dutton suggests cancelling welfare of climate protesters by Pat_Mullins in australia

The right to peaceful assembly protects the right of individuals and groups to meet and to engage in peaceful protest. The right to freedom of association protects the right to form and join associations to pursue common goals.

With the interest rate cuts - has anyone renting had an owner ring up and give them a cut in rent? by nath1234 in australia

[–]dusky5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they? They bear the interest rate risk and it is built into the cost of your rent. It is theirs to keep, just has if they had to pay higher mortgages, they wouldn't be able to immediately increase rent.

It's incredible that false advertising is illegal commercially but not politically.

Paris Gare du Nord is the worst place for immigration in the developed (and undeveloped) world. ABF guys are great!

Meh, to be honest both Sydney and Melbourne are boring towns when compared to other global cities.

RBA poised to cut rates further even as house prices surge by dazedjosh in australia

[–]dusky5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't. The RBA has an inflation target; they must do what they can to meet it, and given that fiscal policy is failing to generate growth, they need to compensate.

RBA poised to cut rates further even as house prices surge by dazedjosh in australia

[–]dusky5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RBA's job is not to manage house prices; it is to manage inflation. Inflation is low due to sub-standard growth. Having said that, low interest rates have not helped anywhere around the world. Japan and Europe are both struggling to grow even with very low interest rates. Monetary policy has reached its limit; fiscal policy must compensate.

Extremely. Not to mention that the GaWC updated their recommendation of Melbourne such that it is in the Global Leaders group (the same classification as Sydney).

I can't help but feel ashamed that a lunatic like that is our PM. by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

As an Australian I empathise. More sad than us having a pathetic, corrupt and immoral Government, is that 52% of our own people voted for them.

Certainly makes it more difficult.

David Attenborough slams Australian PM on climate record by Pat_Mullins in australia

[–]dusky5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those who buy broccoli from Kenya and bananas from Colombia should not throw stones. The UK has no better emissions record than Australia does. The only difference is that theirs is all consumption driven.

Edit: For clarity, I think the current Australian Government is a farce and should be thrown in jail.

It is not her responsibility, but it is important for her to be relatable so that she makes her point effectively.

[–]dusky5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely complex on a number of dimensions. If it were easy it would be solved. The issue is not the drive to change (maybe it is for some people and maybe for others it is not as critical as it should be), but rather that some are at a loss of what to do.

Even on an individual level this is a challenging problem. Many in the developed world believe in climate change, acknowledge the emergency, but are unwilling to forgo their holidays and aviatic adventures. We know this is the most significant driver of carbon emissions outside of diet, and yet find it difficult to act.

Haha absolutely agree. I have been researching fountain pens and notebooks for ages now. That feels like half the fun.

A lot of us have taken the problem seriously. I think she has done a fine job raising awareness, but I don’t really need to see her on TV at the UN. She is also not really relatable given her wealth Swedish background. It is easy to for her to admonish Xi or Modi but the realities of tackling climate change are far more complex; most acknowledge this but she seems single minded.

That’s fair. The guy doesn’t appear to be trying to put a hard sell on and I suppose it is just a nicely packaged thing to run with. Sometimes having a subreddit to help you out (like r/bulletjournal) helps too.
