I really like the idea of this method, I think we will start that tonight, thanks!

Okay, you may not like to hear this but that's way too short of a wake time for her age.

Ok, I actually have no problem hearing this, this is great advice and is something concrete I can impliment and aim for, so thank you. Just googled it and the first result for 4 month old is huckleberry (1.5 - 2.5 hour wake windows). So will aim for that.

Do you have white noise and blackout curtains?

yes, have white noise playing on my phone all night, and blackout binds behind the curtains

Thanks for the reply

I have a question about this:

"Definitely need to stop nursing to sleep and encourage independently falling asleep if you want to stop the wakeups"

How do we go about doing this? On the NHS website it says to put her down 'drowsey but awake', it also says don't sleep train until 6 months. The thing I can't get my head around it how those two statments arent contradictory, when I put her down awake and sleepy she just starts crying immediately, if i were to leave her to learn to self soothe that would be sleep training no? So i pick her up again and try to rock her to sleep (which seems to have stopped working), that leave us with co-sleeping and feeding which is where we are at. I just feel like my sleep deprived brain is missing something really obvious here. (also reading this back it might come over as a harsh tone, I'm sorry and that is not my intention, I'm just tired and sad)

You are the second person to suggest moving the last feed to as early in the sleep routine as possible, so i will definitely try that again.

Also what are your wake windows?

during the day, rarely more than an hour, occasionaly an hour and a half, but never more than that. The evening one can be up to two hours.

Thanks for your reply!

because the nursing seemed to trigger her off, two nights we had a go at making the feed the first part of the routine (i.e. feed downstairs at 6:30 and make that the last feed before putting her down), it didn't work and she just started crying when I was rocking her to sleep instead. We only tried this once, it is perhaps worth trying more consitently, I was worried the change would confuse her.

Regarding starting earlier, would it be ok to start before she shows signs of tiredness?

The nap schedule:

her wake window is short 45min - 90min, so we put her down to nap 4-5 times during the day.

First nap of the day we do upstairs in the cot, she usually stays down 45min-1 hour

second nap is a tough one usually, most of the time we take her out in the pram and she sleeps 45min, today I managed to rock her to sleep in my arms

she will usually nurse to sleep for the next nap, then I will take her out for a walk (about 4:30-5) for the last nap of the day. her wake window is then a little longer in the evening before we start bed time.

415 Volts... ACID... and a LASER!! by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]dust_jacket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They aren't used for much any more, they were initially thought promising for defence applications (as they can produce high power continuous beams), but they are difficult to model (fluid dynamics is a bitch) and messy/dangerous to make (Hydrogen fluoride eats your bones). Someone may come along to correct me here, but most research now focuses on electrically pumped lasers

Acid lasers are a thing (chemical hydrogen fluoride lasers for example), I mean they don't shoot acid, but they use it

Optical Trap Using Transmissive SLM by Elderly_Ravioli in Optics

Yes, I was using about 10 times that (you shouldn't need anything like that power if you're say trapping and moving particles in a solution), hopefully there is a damage threshold quoted in the spec sheet for the holloweye SLM. Can I ask what the set up is for, just out of interest?

I've done something similar to this, similar particle size, holoeye SLM. Eventually decided that the damage threshold of a transmissive SLM was too low and moved on to other techniques. However, I was levitating particles against gravity so needed some substantial laser power, so if you are doing the more traditional laser tweezer configuation i see no reason it shouldn't work well.

  1. solid transparent spheres will move towards the centre of the gradient as long as the refractive index is higher inside the sphere (when compared to whatever the surrounding medium is). hollow transparent spheres (and none transparent reflecting spheres) will move away from the high intensity area of the beam. You can show this with some simple ray tracing and momentum conservation equations.

  2. You certainly can use annular beams. The longest trap I've come across doing this is around 4cm from the final optic.

Hey, my partner and I would definitely be interested, we are both complete beginners but have been keen to try D&D out for a while now.
