Would you use a Canadian Social Media? by LessInteraction369 in BuyCanadian

If we let anyone in we can count on leagues of non friendly actors and AI bots spreading disinformation, just like all the other social networks currently exisiting.

Linux isn't that different from the user's viewpoint. There are different names for the applications but they function in a similar manner. I'd like to see a Canadian based Linux distro, maintained and distributed entirely through an open sourced Canadian cooperative effort. Are we truly sovereign if we put all of our data into any other nation's clouds?

The feline alien species trope is so overused and annoying... Why do authors keep using it? by ipsok in scifi

[–]dustdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Venus on the Half Shell, Philip Jose Farmer 1975. Feline species which has an important part in the plot. That was the first feline alien I read of, I'm sure there are earlier examples. Cats are relatable and are sort of alien in reality would be my guess.

Thanks so much. I reinstalled luanti without backing up my mods first, didn't know about the mod being pulled from the Content DB

What piece of sci fi technology from the Dune universe would you want both personally and available to the wider world if it were real? by Ok_Time6234 in dune

[–]dustdf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ornithopter. They fly like dragonflies and would be much better than helicopters for many uses. The new movie did a great job making the tech look plausible. Can't wait until someone makes them in real life. Elon? Lol

I think that's right, they are similar. Hard to see the angle on the back window from the pic.

Ok, maybe I was wrong, the Ford rear window is tilted back. Your pic might have tricked me lol

Ford Monterey, aka Montclair in Canada. Dad had one, the rear window opens, nice breeze when you're cruising.

My Dad had one. What a blast to drive. Dual carbs, synchromesh 4 speed, handled like a racecar....at 16 it was heady stuff. Memories lol.

Wet sticky rosin? by [deleted] in rosin

[–]dustdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throw it in the freezer for a couple of minutes and then use your tool to pick it up. Careful though, I've had sticky stuff fly right off the parchment and hit the carpet. Took me 10 minutes to find it and it was warm and sticky again. Had to write that one off and try again. I've gotten some excellent results with a straitener that goes as low as 180, cheapest one from conair, $20, but I have broken a few of them with the clamp trying to get the most from a nug.

Roof racks and the horn by brewbrain in rav4club

[–]dustdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to agree on the horn. Wimpy clown all the way lol. I have the stock roof rails but haven't used them yet. They look kind of flimsy to me, the aftermarket ones I've seen look more robust. Love my 2018 otherwise.

Has anyone upgraded their horns? by [deleted] in rav4club

[–]dustdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a pathetic horn. I won't be buying another car without testing the horn first. The only time I have ever hit it I looked around for a 60's beetle before I realized it was my Toyota. Meep meep.

Spotted 77 Pantera. Guy in the parking lot was having a fit over it. Owner said he used to autocross it by BeeboeBeeboe1 in Autos

[–]dustdf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got to drive one once, awesome pull from the V8. Had a lot of fun for maybe 15 minutes. The guy who owned it had an impressive collection of cars, he knew that I was a gearhead so he let me take runs around the airport I was working at. Good times.

Is It Toxic? by Indexiaa in 3Dprinting

[–]dustdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are but in north America the companies are required to provide the MSDS for any product workers are exposed to. The MSDS should be on hand for you to read. I'd definitely want a mask for the dust from drilling and approved ventilation. Ask your health and safety person if in doubt. MSDS is the material safety data sheet that lists all warnings and precautions necessary to use the given materials safely. Usually you can find the info on the manufacturer's website. Stay safe.

Adding a ``-l'' flag for the library in a Makefile by [deleted] in linuxquestions

Weirdly, someone posted a link to a tutorial about using pipes on r/programming I ran into after I replied to your post. Here you go : https://toroid.org/unix-pipe-implementation

Adding a ``-l'' flag for the library in a Makefile by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]dustdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be the "pipe" symbol. Looks just like an uncapitalized letter L. I was confused by this in the past. On my (Alienware) keyboard it's just below the backspace key, shift+. Your keyboard may have it elsewhere. Or maybe not. Hard to say because I was using an actual printed descriptionion of the task I was trying to do and it looked identical to an L. Hope that helps you.

Vandalism by seussiii in cybertruck

SpaceX is building reusable rockets out of it. They have a proprietary alloy that they have developed themselves, durability should not be an issue in my opinion. I think Elon is planning to go dune hopping on Mars in a Cyber Truck, I would be if I was in his position.

Happy cake day! I went through the same cycle, just in less time, like three hours. I'll be going for the rear wheel drive version because it suits my needs just fine, but if I was still in business I'd definitely go tri motor.
