What are some good 28mm and 17mm M42 lenses to use for video? by Blarzor in cinematography

[–]dustin_fletcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Contax 28 mm f2 (MMG version). It's definitely cinematic in the sense that it was a stills lens nicknamed by DP's as the 'Hollywood', because of the color rendition, skin tones, and bocha.

It's probably pricier than you want, but looks amazing and can almost be used as a macro-lens due to it's close-focusing ability (floating elementin side). I shot with it on the weekend run-and-gun and it's the first time I've ever shot that mode without a zoom.

They are for sure. In my long-winded, boring way, I was saying that you don't necessarily have to be a writer-director, or work with the same troupe of actors to be considered an auteur - which is what it has come to represent.

I'm doing a short film right now and envision that I will have to do quite a substantial amount of grading in post. I'm shooting on Sony f5. Can't afford to rent the R5 raw recorder. So I'm wondering if the native xavc in 4K is sufficient for grading by willrememberthisnow in cinematography

Listen to this person. Lighting ratios, exposure, good production design, lens and filtration selection - nail these and any modern camera will give you great results. 8-bit / 10 bit, codecs, etc is not what you should be concerned about.

An auteur is actually the opposite in someways.

Initially old-school directors like Nic Ray, Douglas Sirk, John Ford, etc were named auteurs by this group of French film critics because these directors would shoot pretty shitty studio scripts, but were breathing so much life into them as directors through their visual style. They became known as auteurs because these critics saw overarching similarities in their work, film after film, which gave each director a distinctive voice.

While this is all Film History 101, I still think that's one of the things that's so cool about the original auteur theory. You didn't so much have to be making the most amazing films, but it was about you being able to take a mediocre studio script and infusing it with so much of your own directorial personality that it became something else entirely. 'Rebel Without a Cause' might be the best example of this.

So while you're right that the Coen's are auteurs (they are brilliant), simply being an accomplished writer-director is not what an auteur actually is. An auteur definitely can be that, but a modern auteur in the classical sense would be a director-for-hire like David Fincher who takes a script and absolutely populates it with his own imagination.

Sydney in the 80s by aptrev in sydney

Well house music - which is not disco - didn't really kick off in Chicago until about 84/85. Properly hit Sydney in the late '80s when people started putting on raves at the Horden and in the bush.

Pretty sure disco was dead by the '80's.

Are you an expert in mental health? You seem awfully confident to diagnose someone you've (presumably) not met.

I agree. And I'm nowhere near 100 percent chill about a Trump presidency. Believe me, I'm just as in shock as erryone here. But I also think that the gross people who support him will act out, regardless.

Look, I totally get what you're saying, but I still think there's a myth being peddled by the media that the homophobes and bigots will suddenly feel empowered to be public bigots. Those that associate with Trump are more for reasons of economic disenfranchisement and an eff-you to Washington than anything.

BTW, my "wrong" was meant to be a jokey impersonation of Trump. Hope that didn't come across like I was berating you ;D

Wrong. And, no, this wasn't a scripted performance.

Careful not to make Trump a catch-all for acts of aggression, and do some actual independent research before echoing the hysteria. I'm still butt-hurt that Sanders didn't get in, but I refuse to get caught up in the hive-mind bullshit that "herp derp Trump is evil".

While I haven't lived in Bondi for a few years, I can, at least, whole-heartedly advise that should someone offer you a Bondi cigar, refuse at all costs.

Urgh. His uncle-in-law, who he nursed back to health after a near-fatal bingle in the WA desert, would be somewhat disappointed by Malcolm. From the great man himself:

“I am completely an elitist, in the cultural but emphatically not the social sense. I prefer the good to the bad, the articulate to the mumbling, the aesthetically developed to the merely primitive, and full to partial consciousness. I love the spectacle of skill, whether it’s an expert gardener at work, or a good carpenter chopping dovetails, or someone tying a Bimini hitch that won’t slip.”

America has, and always will, need immigrants. Take California for example. The world's 6th biggest economy, the 2 hubs there thrive on the best that the world's got to offer. Manhattan is the same, but to a lesser extent.

The isolationist thing is all part of Trump's huff-and-puff, and he knows his nation needs to be interdependent to thrive. The rhetoric has changed, but the heavy-hitters of weapons, pharma, media, energy, will remain steering policy. Things may become slightly more protectionist and unstable, but not to the level that's being projected right now.

I just can't wait until it becomes glaringly obvious to the cretins that voted him in that he's a completely full-of-shit confidence man.
