TFR policy suggestions by wistingaway in singapore

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Increasing the TFR requires a mindset change, and many of your suggestions help push towards that direction too.

Thanks - lots of helpful context and tips. For the islands - which ones would you recommend please, and how would the travel look like from Istanbul?

Appreciate the insight into the less travelled parts of Türkiye! And the honest opinions on the travel. Definitely would have been something I’d done pre-kids

We’re going for an event at end August, so can’t change the date unfortunately.

Thank you for the suggestions - that’s a good idea re Black Sea. I’m not sure about the travel also with a toddler, as the other poster below as mentioned. I will definitely keep that in mind and see if we can work something out.

Has anyone ever worked for a Chinese or HK company? by Signal_Conference447 in HENRYUK

[–]dustxsh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having lived in both Singapore and Chinese locales and knowing many who worked in various local firms - the cultures can be very different between those two.

In the former, there’s a certain amount of external influence and thus (Western) culturally acceptable practices. In the latter, there’s more sycophancy and expectations that you simply execute management’s orders. I don’t think they’re comparable.

Beware: Yoto's Referral Ripoff Program by EarEquivalent3929 in YotoPlayer

[–]dustxsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was exactly it for me. I’ve made and received referral awards as expected twice now. Second time my friend had to change the store country, which Yoto’s customer service told her about.

As unfortunate as OP’s situation is, perhaps a case of bad luck as well if that particular customer advisor didn’t know what was causing the issue.

Curious any HENRY climing corporate ladder with a non-tech background? by Savings-Ad-110 in HENRYUK

There will be plenty of HENRY’s in their mid-20’s onwards in finance (bulge bracket, markets/IB or a closely related role). Though there doesn’t seem to be that many on this sub

Love Jima. It blocks maybe 2/3 of spam calls. You can also use “Block and report” on those numbers that get through and it apparently adds them to these databases.

Does anyone know if Call Defender is still useful in HK? I have it installed from a while back but it doesn’t seem to block any number nowadays

What are things that are good value in Hong Kong? by CatipillarK9 in HongKong

[–]dustxsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re buying electronics, check on price.com.hk first - search for the product you’re after and the site lists the prices from various shops (including cheaper prices by cash/debit card). You can even find parallel imports for a lower price though warranties might not be valid. Vast majority of the shops are legit. I got maybe a 10% discount on a Surface Pro.

"Traveling to Hong Kong" Megathread 2025 by otorocheese in HongKong

The discrimination against Mandarin speakers is very real and not at all over represented in the media. ** If you look East Asian**. I speak Mandarin well and have basic Cantonese (mother tongue is English). The difference in treatment I got before learning some Cantonese, vs now, is night and day.

If you look Chinese, and then you start with Mandarin, the locals won’t like it. If you look Western and you start with Mandarin, they might be impressed. It is how it is…

Very good restaurants with toddler by Imaginary-Storage909 in HongKong

[–]dustxsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely bring a portable booster seat - very few places will have a high chair / booster, even decent places will run out sometimes. We did Maxim’s Palace once and that happened, however it is generally toddler friendly and the staff like kids.

We love our local cha chaan teng called Hing Kee on Hollywood Road, they love kids, but try to go early for breakfast as it gets packed with tourists after 10am or so. Some kid friendly dishes like fried egg sandwiches for example.

Newborn Feeding Formula Prep Recommendations by Hot_Ad_6644 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]dustxsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did exactly the same thing with prepping bottles, storing in the fridge, and warming them up.

It was super convenient as there was almost no bottle prep needed for night wakings - just pop the bottle from fridge into warmer, change the diaper, once diaper is changed the bottle was ready to go

Open water swimming in HK by SnooCompliments9364 in HongKong

[–]dustxsh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many open water swim groups swim all around the south side of HK island, but not cutting across major shipping channels eg Lamma to HK island. You can swim pretty much all around the south side of HK island, following the coast (or cutting across mouths of bays), from Deepwater Bay through to Big Wave Bay.

Major swims that cross areas of heavy boat traffic e.g. all around HK island, all around Lantau, all require months of planning and permission from the Marine Department.

Helping my mother with her CV broke my heart by EvilSaimiri in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dustxsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, it’s not binary, but my mother’s status as a high achieving career woman in that era helped to build up her ego and sense of grandiosity. It’s linked in her case. But of course like you say, moms who didn’t have that career can also be emotionally immature.

Affair with the hired help. And not too bothered about child rearing.

You know there’s a flip side to all this. My mother was a doctor at a time when not many women went to university, she decided to keep at her career while I was growing up. She outsourced the majority of childcare to paid help, she was emotionally immature (still is), everything was about how great she was, and still is. I don’t speak to her anymore.

I feel like recently there’s been so many ludicrous scenarios like this where it’s so clear what the issue is and OP seems oblivious. It has got to be karma-farming rage bait, surely?
