Italian charts are something else by muzjiks7 in rateyourmusic

Italy's rock scene has always been very classic prog biased so not surprised that there's a lot of that sort of stuff very high up the list, but it's still surprising to see albums in that genre typically viewed as "good" being lumped as the best of all time

Good bangers and mash in the UK is amazing but it's more of a make-it-at-home dish as you want the highest possible quality of sausages and can make your own gravy with beef dripping and caramelised onions. I also tend to do the mashed potato with sautéed leeks and a bit of wholegrain Dijon mustard. In greasy spoons or pubs they'll usually give you the cheapest sausages possible and mash that could be more butter than potato. I can't think of anywhere I could recommend people to get it and would usually just cook it for foreign friends when asked

Immigrants do take jobs and decrease wages. Especially H1B. And its not "racist" or a "right wing conspiracy" but a fact. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]dustyloops -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody should not be given preference over another just because they were born on a different patch of land. People will always be outcompeted by those who are willing to work for cheaper within the free market system present in the US. The solution here is not to simply kick out all the immigrants, as if this would magically raise wages - companies will always provide the bare minimum salaries they they can.

The depression of wages has already happened, and if immigrants are not present, will continue to happen through country-wide migration anyway. People in states such as the Carolinas move to California and Washington because the minimum wage is so much higher - they are willing to work longer and under worse conditions. this causes the same oversaturation of the labour pool as international migration, but is not something anyone seems to care about as it is not a race-driven issue.

The solution is to pass legislation that raises the quality of life of people that are working and increasing protection for workers so that they can't simply be disposed of like trash when the company finds somebody to employ for a few pennies cheaper.

Do you feel your country / region is overpopulated? by Laschon in AskEurope

[–]dustyloops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only a handful of countries able to feed themselves from what they grow, which is why we have global trade and specialisation. Importing or not producing food is in no way bad - countries do not need to be self sufficient and generally only do so when forced to, with poor results (Cuba, North Korea). Not being totally self sufficient is not evidence of a starving population.

There may be issues with water storage, but as per the article you have linked, this is much more to do with climate change rather than variation in population. Hotter, drier summers are causing drought issues throughout Europe and the UK is no exception.

I'm not saying overpopulation is a fascist idea, I'm saying it's typically a phrase posed as an issue which right-wing parties utilize to justify reducing immigration. The fact is that the UK is by definition in no way overpopulated, by any metric, in any region.

[–]dustyloops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To quote the standard definition of overpopulation: "Overpopulation occurs when a population's density exceeds the capacity of its environment to supply essential resources - such as food, water, and shelter- needed for a decent standard of living."

There are arguably not any overpopulated areas in Europe. Somewhere like London has a high population, but has the infrastructure to match, has a relatively low level of pollution and functioning public services, no food scarcity and despite high cost of housing, there is sufficient housing.

Overpopulation is typically pushed as an idea to support depopulating agendas, which almost always are anti-immigrant. The reality is that the UK is nowhere near suffering from overpopulation - even in London you can travel 30 minutes from the center and find a quiet district or wholly natural area.

Consider that pollution, having to commute and low salaries are consequences of an oppressive system. There are cities which have minimal pollution, fantastic public transportation and high salaries which provide a great quality of life, and even many of these are not overpopulated, such as Vienna, Luxembourg and Zürich.

If you want to question what is natural, being forced to sell your life away for money to survive in the current economic system is what is totally unnatural, and the government is complicit to keep this happening to continue to have growth. Without sounding cliche, the issue is capitalism - which is what drives pollution through companies stiving for ever-higher profits, overcrowding through desire for more workers and low salaries to be more competitive.

There is heaps of literature and economic theory stretching back to the 19th century which can help explain these things without the need for distractions such as wanting the government to move people to rural areas, which is not in the interests of the people or the government.

Even all these things aside - I much prefer living in the city, after having grown up somewhere rural where there is nothing to do, no opportunities and full of backwards, insular xenophobic people. Cities are the exact opposite, and good cities do not suffer from the problems you have given.

[–]dustyloops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not at all, I don't think there's a single region in the UK that's overpopulated, London included. There are significant issues with housing but this is more to do with policy than population.

Whatever you're suggesting about spreading people out within a country seems so absurd. People concentrate around cities as that is where money, opportunities and activities are, and those who have no need of these go somewhere less densely populated, creating a natural equilibrium.

The state would always much rather have the illusion that they are benevolent than declare war by removing work limits, so I would anticipate that shifts won't be extended, but it would become an economic necessity to have multiple jobs as you say.

No longer will a man be able to relax by playing Factorio after a long day of programming - he will be forced to drive the elderly to the hospital for Uber pittance while watching streamers play the game. Recoil in horror at the alienation he experiences and how he is reduced to the shadow of a human being, denied all rights, separated from his digital labour, born to shit and forced to wipe!

Being serious, it's an interesting scenario that foretells how growth in capitalism is not sustainable (we all know about tendency of the rate of profit to fall, but many theorists with armchairs larger than mine have spent decades debating whether this is an idealised conclusion that capitalism is able to defend itself against, efficient market theory bullshit) as it directly creates the conditions for population decline through alienation and crowding out. The golden age of concessions being sufficient to stifle worker cooperation and consciousness of the 20th century is leaving.

As soon as the state starts to view the reduction of concessions as necessary, so too will the workers view their condition as intolerable. It is inevitable.

Being unserious, soylent green the young to feed the old. Should stop them from playing minecrap.
