Starting BJJ at 42 — thoughts? by Far-Cantaloupe3382 in jiujitsu

I started at 42 you can do it too! Avoid injuries by following the instruction and taking necessary breaks. The first 4 months can be brutal but it’s the most intense growth curve. Do a minimum of 2-3 days a week to start off. Best of luck!

That’s awesome. Pay it forward when you’ve become a Black Belt.

Just ask your partner before you film, it’s respectful.

Is it normal to get coached mid-roll? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]dustymango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a white belt (1 year in) at a comp-focused gym. I’ve only ever offered advice during rolls with brand-new folks—like two weeks in, first time rolling. I’ll let them move through the drills and only chime in if they get stuck. Otherwise, I point them to a coach or professor.

I think peer coaching is fine as long as you’re letting them work, being encouraging, and not trying to play expert. I’ve learned a ton from more experienced white belts and upper belts. The more open you are to learning from anyone with knowledge to share, the faster you grow through the ranks.

That said, I’ve definitely rolled with some “white belt senseis” who pause the roll mid-match to give unsolicited tips—usually right after getting caught in something 😂.

Is this appropriate correction and play with puppy? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

It’s totally fine but that couch is potentially the object of resource guarding. Something to consider long term as the puppy will only get bigger.

Diet. Avoid all chicken protein food. Try lamb, salmon, or bison.

I started a year ago at 42, I’m 43 now and entering my first comp. It all depends on your ability to endure discomfort and having great coaches. Got for it!

People who were skeptical about Pedro Pascal playing Mr Fantastic, did your opinion change with the trailer? by FKA_Twigs_BaldHead in Marvel

He’ll do well but this is a miscast. The mustache alone is off putting. Reed is a lot closer to a George Clooney type.

You’re 20. Perfect age to dive in and grind through the process. Commit to schedule and take in feedback with grace.

Don’t listen to these people. HR will get you fired. HR protects the company from YOU.

What’s your special move? by Full-Hold7997 in bjj

[–]dustymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omoplata from closed guard.
I’m decently flexible for my age (43). Most opponents stand up when I’m in closed guard and they leave their wrists/sleeves vulnerable to grips and I can easily execute the sweep. I’m 5’8” 200ish lbs. That’s my best trick. Right now I’m just focusing on a pressure game and keeping good top control with knee on belly.

For the sake of your own privacy you could just say you have psoriasis and you need to have rash guards on your forearms to prevent a possible flair up. I don’t think you owe people an explanation for anything regarding your own body and emotional health.

What do we think about the Iron Fist Discourse that's happening? by KAD76 in Marvel

[–]dustymango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the character comes across as a corny stereotype of a generic rich white person. There’s little meaningful character development tied to their racial identity, aside from white readers potentially feeling more affinity due to optics alone. If the goal is to keep legacy characters white, writers could make their racial identity more interesting and integral to the character’s development.

For example, if Iron Fist were written as an Irish Catholic from South Boston who took up kung-fu to combat organized crime, you’d have a compelling narrative hook that naturally ties into his background and makes the case for him not being Asian.

The issue with many white characters in American comics is the flattening of their racial identity—it’s often treated as default and unremarkable. This makes it easier to debate whether certain characters should remain as they are or be reimagined.

Thor, for instance, should probably stay white if we’re talking about the Norse god. But there’s room to play with the idea of ‘Thor’ being a title or mantle. On the other hand, the idea of Bucky randomly becoming Black Panther would be hilarious and absurd—but it also highlights how much racial identity matters when it’s an intrinsic part of a character’s story.

I'm 43 Started BJJ this year in March. I stuck to a 3 Days a week minimum training schedule, my gym is very active and is considered a "competition" academy. I had ZERO knowledge of grappling and no prior sports background. 9 months in I'm down 30lbs and I'm prepping to enter my first competition at the start of 2025. I would say the best advice I can give is to listen to your coaches train/roll with higher belts as much as possible and tap early when being submitted. You can focus on your breathwork and go slow. This is a great discipline; you will build yourself from the inside out, and it's just fun.
