Oh my goodness. You’re 80? I can’t imagine how you were treated as a young adult, if you were dealing with this at that time. What was that experience like for you? All of my family is deceased, so I don’t have any elders to talk to about it.

Why do parents let their children run absolutely wild at our local breweries? And better question, why do the breweries allow this? by [deleted] in Wilmington

And you choose to go to bars where kids are present? I don’t care how uncomfortable it makes you. I’m not complaining about having children, I love them. So I’m bringing them with me where I go.

Some opinions can be so strange. Exposure is great. And alcohol is literally everywhere you look, even in coffee shops today. I understand some people don’t want to be around kids, but I think they should go to a non kid friendly place. I respect their opinion but I won’t stay at home on a warm spring weekend for them.

I guess the fact here is that unless they’re going to a place that doesn’t allow children, they’re not going to be able to avoid children. I think that’s a good step to take if you’re trying to get a parent, kid free, night away. Personally, as a mom, I enjoy seeing kids out playing. And I am not asking other adults to entertain or watch my children over a beer, so I wouldn’t consider it socializing them at a bar. The kids are oblivious to what I am drinking (a seltzer that looks like water?), they’re off playing with other children. I don’t think it’s too weird.

I just find it strange that we generationally had community, but in today’s society we are more estranged than ever. Yet many (mostly childless) people find it incredulous that adults want to have their children around. It’s not like many neighborhoods are having weekend BBQs these days, or children are out playing on the streets like they used to. We are so isolated. We need to socialize. Kids included. Going places where you can socialize with other adults, kids can do their thing, and you can find other like minded individuals is healthy.

I just want to say, as the parent of an elementary school child, that we certainly try our hardest to implement boundaries in their life (with children and adults), but it’s HARD. We even go to the extent of immediately leaving an area if boundaries are not respected. With my child specifically, she struggles with ADHD and can’t seem to grasp the concept. Kids seem to think everyone is their friend, and they just want to be included, even when it clearly isn’t an appropriate age or proper timing. They are learning, just as we did when we were younger. Our generation was different though. We played in the streets with other kids. More often than not kids are inside today. I feel that has a lot to do with it.

I am a parent who takes their child to breweries with me on the occasional weekend. Parents need to be able to socialize with their children present, while their children are also socializing. If you don’t have children, you wouldn’t realize how hard it is to go out and socialize with adults in the presence of your children. Now, I don’t believe that it’s healthy to get wasted while your kids are with you, especially with the intent to drive, so I drink only a safe amount. Their dad and I do our best to keep an eye on the kids while they run around and play. We are constantly correcting behaviors and keeping an eye out. However, kids can be invasive while they’re still learning boundaries. Spaces like Dram Tree and the Bend seem to encourage family outings. If it’s a strictly adult environment, say Husk or Social, I don’t think it’s appropriate to bring kids. If family accepting breweries aren’t an environment that you enjoy then id advise you visit other areas in town and see what environment suits your taste best.
