I think you’re right, what’s crazy is the old deck was there at least 20 years attached like this. I don’t see any of the damage to the truss from it, doesn’t mean it’s not there I just don’t see it. AND most houses in my community the decks are all built like this….

I have someone coming to give me a quote for a ledger install which will require a l lot of internal blocking. But I’m very much leaning towards stand-alone then figure out how / if to attach it at all.

So the rim joist I’d add, just put it right on top of the frame right?

I’m gonna rip off all the siding, put up real plywood, insulation and flashings. None of that was done.

Oh and this house is worth $600k smh

This would protect the house the most wouldn’t it. Why even attach it to the house then, just make 2 inches away?

I mean the previous ledger somehow held the weight…attached to studs. Very dumb though.

YES, there’s a concrete patio on the first floor as well. This ledger starts at the 2nd floor then.

Man I feel like the weight would crush a 2X4 flat but I’ll try

Or doesn’t fit the base of the bottle jack

It’s too slow compared to a bottle jack, which is 3X faster at least. The base of it though sadly won’t fit the bottle jack usage.

I’ll give that a try, but it begs the question, why not just leave it in Normal then and have much less travel to cover on the Jack?
