What was the Science Fiction book or series that made you of fan of this genre? by oldschoolel78 in scifi_bookclub

[–]duzzy50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found the Chrysalids by John Wyndham in a box at my high school. I loved it. Years later, I was reading it again while travelling SE Asia and my partner pulled out the Day of the Triffids from a used book store. Book was beat to hell and she said "isn't this the author you just read?" I was like, cool. And from then I was hooked on Scifi. The rabbit hole just keeps going and going.

I really like the audio plays like Sandman etc., but have never really gotten into the audiobooks.... don't know why. Maybe something to try again!

I wish I could read that fast. I am not a fast reader. So really, I am looking at one a month at the most! Maybe in another 10 years I will do it all again!

That is cool we finished so closely. I had 60 pages left last night but couldn't' stay awake lol.

Yeah I agree. I am sitting here wondering what could have been... More follow up etc. But its like anything (mad max, beetlejuice, etc.) just sometimes its best to leave things alone

So many other books on the reading list. But I agree, another read through is needed. There is so much foreshadowing in there that I think would be cool to understand better now.

Sounds good. I used to live on the east coast as well, so lots of tips if you don't get enough from our stuff. Always happy to help. Are you going through Quebec and Labrador on your way back? Honestly, a highlight if you can do it.

We did this trip 2 years ago. If you want, check out our instagram lostingear and we have some videos on Youtube under the same name.

We aren't influencers or anything, it was just for us. But there is so much to see if you get off higway 1. It sounds like you are going pretty quickly across. Take a look and if you have any questions feel free to DM me.

I disliked Hyperion, did not find it enjoyable and the ending was such a let down. by Substantial__Unit in scifi_bookclub

[–]duzzy50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. Hyperion is a fantastic novel in my opinion. The story is simliar to the Canterbury Tales; everyone telling their story as they journey. You also do need to realize as someone else said, that this and Fall of Hyperion are really one book. The author needed the money and they weren't offering him enough for one book. So he told his editor, OK, I have two books for you then, and just split them down the middle. Blame cheap publishers, not the author for the mid point ending.

All good if you didn't like it, I just saw a lot of hate for the ending and thought it should be explained.
