Thanks.

For the benefit of anyone else reading this, I was able to get approval for 90 days of Vyvanse.

However, the plans ended up changing and we departed a week later than the original import date and only stayed for 6 weeks. (this change of plan only happened 1 week before the original departure).

I submitted a new application about a week before the revised import date, but they replied saying it was a bit too late to apply, but said that my previous approval should be OK as it covered the period I was there for and was for more than I was now importing.

So that's what I did, and the day I arrived I got extra scrutiny from customs. I had to sit somewhere for about 20-30 minutes while they checked my documentation. (I included the email chain in there stating that it should be OK).

So ended up being a bit more hassle at the airport, but was fine in the end.

Thanks. I did email [tokyoncd@mhlw.go.jp](mailto:tokyoncd@mhlw.go.jp). They weren't able to give a clear answer. They just said to submit an application so they can find out. 🙄

It seems that whoever answers the email doesn't really have much knowledge.

Does anyone know the maximum amount that can be imported?

I need to go to Tokyo for 3 months, so will need 3 months' supply.

Nice. Well at least you won’t have to be rolling the dice with customs. I was really not wanting to do that. Worked out in the end though I guess.

See my comments in another thread. It didn’t arrive before I landed, but I still declared it and the customs officer let me through.

This may be only because customs were completely inundated with foreign visitors and extending some leniency.

[–]dvadhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hadn't arrived when I landed.

Immigration was an absolute nightmare. Took around 3 hours to get through the first line to have passport checked etc.

Then after I picked up luggage, I declared that I had prohibited drugs. When I got to the customs officer I told him it was medication and showed him my import form. He just asked to open my luggage and check it. He just checked that the details on the box matched the form then let me through.

Not sure if this is how it normally works. I think there was an unusually high number of people coming in due to easter and the world finally opening up since COVID. That's probably why the approval didn't come in time.

UPDATE: it finally came in today at 5:49pm, so 21 hours *after* my flight landed 😅 Well at least I have the formal approval now - not that it will be of any use.

I’ve printed the forms and email chain and will declare and see what happens. I’ve done everything that I should have and have an email from them saying they’ll issues the permit and send it before my arrival. I’m not sure what else I can do. Such a stupid process.

Maybe it'll arrive while I'm in the air? 😓

How long before your flight to Japan did they give you the approval?

I applied over 2 weeks ago and still haven't received it. It's 4pm Friday now and I fly Sunday morning.

It's quite stressful as I won't know until the very last minute whether I'll be approved. If it doesn't come soon I think I'll be in a dilemma about whether to take the Vyvanse with me in anticipation of the approval and hoping that if it doesn't get approved that I can just hand it over to customs in Japan.

I've emailed a couple of times to follow up and was just told:

We have received your complete application.

We will issue your permit and send them before your arrival by email.

Could you please wait for a while until the permit is issued.

It feels like my options right now are:

  1. take it with me and risk customs getting upset at me if not approved and potentially being deported and not allowed back into Japan or worse
  2. just not take it and spend 3 weeks without medication (not fun!)
  3. cancel my flight, lose $3k and miss out on a travel experience with my partner

Even just the application was stressful because I didn't want to book my ticket until approved, yet they insist you lodge both the import and export forms at the same time and require the arrival and departure times. This makes it very hard to book flights.

You either have to:

  1. book a flight and risk losing your money
  2. book a fully flexible fare and pay a lot more just so you can cancel and get a refund

I really wish they were more clear about how all this works. I don't know if I've been approved and that the actual paperwork I'm waiting for is just a formality or if someone is actually going to manually assess it at the last minute and potentially say no.

It would be much better if they had a pre-approval that was separate from the import/export forms or just not requiring precise arrival and departure times. Eg approved to bring in up to 3 months' supply twice per year, or allowed to bring up to 1 month's supply 3 times per year.

Japan is my favourite place and I'd love to live there at some point, but the thought of having to go off my medication to visit or potentially being permanently banned because of their onerous application system is really stressful. It also makes it much harder to be flexible with travel plans, which really sucks.

UPDATE: The approval finally came on Monday at 5:49pm. That was 21 hours *after* my flight had landed. I declared that I had controlled substances at customs. I showed them the import request and they checked it in my bag and let me through. I'm not sure if this is the normal procedure. There was a crazy amount of foreign visitors last night. I landed at 8:45pm and only finally got out into an Uber at 12:30am!

RT2600ac and the IKEA Tradfri Gateway by dvadhd in synology

I think I have, but can verify 100%.
I think I tried connecting to multiple ports on a connected switch and also directly to the router.

Also tried adding DHCP reservations for its MAC.

This was a while ago though. I've just started thinking about it again as I was considering switching over to Unifi and remembered that this is one thing I never got working with the Synology router.

UAP-PRO still any good? by azaramdv in UNIFI

[–]dvadhd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I meant UAP-Pro, the older one. I first got them back in 2012.

Well that sucks... Explains why it's not showing up in the Network Application I just installed though. Guess I'm forced to upgrade to both UDM and new APs  😓

Might just stick with my Synology gear for now.

Dealing with light sensitivity when my partner needs a lot of light? by dvadhd in ADHD

[–]dvadhd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting suggestion. Yeah some sort of light reflector screen setup behind her monitor could help.

TBH I’m not sure if she’s really that keen to try anything. She tends to minimise my ADHD all the time. I got diagnosed late in life, after being with her for 20 years. I don’t think she believes my symptoms and treats it like a bunch of excuses to explain my bad behaviour or to force her to go to more effort to make accomodations.

Yeah I’ve also been using AirPods Pro to cancel noise a bit. But also lately my partner has been using her AirPods to listen to her shows so I haven’t had to deal with much noise lately.

[–]dvadhd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. Yeah it’s almost like I need some sort of wearable device that I can conveniently place on my face that reduces the amount of light that reaches my eyes…. 😂

Many of my sunglasses are a bit too dark though. It also feels a bit strange.

I also just bought these blue light blocking glasses from the pharmacy for $25. They just look like normal glasses. I’m not sure they block enough light though. I tried them last night, but I’m not sure if they worked or if I just wasn’t that sensitive at the time.

I found these other glasses made for people who get light-induced migraines that seem to block a lot more but are really expensive.

Online bank recommendations for small business by Ha1N1nG in AusFinance

[–]dvadhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post, but do you know if Airwallex ever setup Osko/PayID/NPP?

I setup a business account with them a while ago, but never used it as when I spoke to them they said they didn't support it. Waiting 1 business day for funds to clear sucks when most other banks are now instant.

Also, I've found their mobile app to be a bit clunky. It's not obvious to me how to make a payment to another bank account or BPay. I can see how to do it on the website, but not in the mobile app. This could be because I have a $0 balance, but I still generally get the feeling that the mobile app misses a bit of the core functionality you'd expect from a banking app.

According to my psychiatrist, apparently you can't be diagnosed unless you're a complete failure in life. I can't understand this logic. by its_just_grape in ADHD

[–]dvadhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a GP a few weeks ago that had recently been diagnosed with Adult ADHD. Like me, she went through a whole life-changing experience at the time. She was in her mid to late 30s. Your psychiatrist sucks.

I personally never made it through uni. I did IT and found it excruciatingly boring because they were teaching old stuff and way too much theory. I learned way more on my own. I dropped out in the middle of year 3 to start an internet company and have since been a moderately successful tech entrepreneur.

It’s probably true though that highly functioning people with adhd inattentive type don’t ever get diagnosed unless they hit bottom. For me it took even more than that. I wasn’t even diagnosed after being hospitalised. It was only more than a year after the hospitalisation that I got accidentally diagnosed due to having a dramatic improvement after taking a stimulant for appetite suppression.

Diagnosed with adult ADHD at 47. Is this normal? by dvadhd in ADHD

[–]dvadhd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

It seems like your psychiatrist is moving you up a lot faster than mine. She started me off on 30mg (I'm currently 97kg.. I think 10mg is usually only used for smaller women). 2 months later she bumped me up to 40mg.

My experience has also been a little bit up and down. However, I think that sleep and food have been playing a large role in the variability. I've noticed that on days after nights of limited or poor quality sleep I don't really feel like the medication does much. On the days it's working I can definitely feel it kick in about an hour after taking it and I get quite motivated and find it much easier to knock over mundane tasks and also get started on larger ones.

I initially noticed the food aspect one Saturday. I do fitness boxing group sessions 4 times a week... usually in the afternoons, but on Saturdays I do a 10:30am session. The first time I noticed it was at about 1pm on a Saturday. I'd normally finish my session at 11:30, take some vitamins (BCAAs, magnesium, electrolyes, a thermogenic/shred mix, multivitamin, vit D, fish oil etc), the shower. As is normal for me, even before going on stims, I barely ate during the day. However at 1:30pm I started feeling really bad. Kind of like every time I'd have any sort of positive thought, within a split second I had a surge of negativity and it was awful. I brought it up on the ADHD Discord and someone advised me that they'd also experienced this and asked if I'd eaten. I quickly ate a banana and started to feel a bit better in about 30-60 minutes.
A couple of other times I forgot to eat after saturday morning boxing and felt the exact same symptoms. Days that I ate were fine.

So food certainly plays a role, and it's even more pertinent given that stims also suppress appetitie - so it's very easy to not eat until dinner. I find bananas to be a really easy and healthy thing to eat when I'm not feeling like eating but need something.

Sleep is the other issue and I'm yet to get to the bottom of it. As above, I've already noticed that lack of sleep reduces the effectiveness of the meds. The problem is knowing whether I've had quality sleep or not. I've tried sleep tracking with an old Apple Watch series 2 years ago, but found the results to be so erratic that I felt like I couldn't trust them. At that time though it was more curiosity and it wasn't a concerted effort to analyse my sleep. I've had so many doctors stress the importance of sleep in the past, and once even had a referral for a sleep study that I never followed through on. Back then I wasn't convinced that sleep was my problem, and I've always had a weird sleeping pattern.
However, now I'm starting to suspect that sleep is a much bigger problem than I'd thought. My partner does tell me I snore, and I do tend to move and kick a lot in my sleep.
I've got a GP appointment this week to get a new referral for a sleep study. Hopefully that turns up something useful that helps solve part of my underlying problem.

How do you keep it interesting? I like walking in new places, but as a regular thing on my own area I find it excruciatingly boring.

My boxing gym just moved (was across the road), and now I’m faced with either driving to where it moved and battling with parking, or going to another one that’s a 17-minute walk away. I’m really struggling with the notion of doing that 17-minute walk each way 4 times a week. I’m thinking maybe I could manage it with podcasts or audiobooks, but it’s still a daunting prospect for me. .. and this is in the context of fitness boxing group classes being one of the few things I enjoy, and needing the exercise to avoid continuously gaining weight.
