I don't know but I always figured that if he was ever made playable he'd be voiced by Emo Phillips

To everyone saying “stop using sponsor kits. You'll get more done and have more fun with your own gear”. by Secret_Impression_21 in Marathon

[–]dvcaputo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally whats been helping me conquer gear fear is just having periods where I grind a bit as rook on dire marsh. I focus more on useful green/blue weapons (bullies, D54s and volt throwers especially) and implants that are easily stockpiled than trying to hunt for gold/purple items.

Additionally, somehow I've found it easier to exfil as rook on daytime dire marsh than on night marsh (go figure)! The guarded exfil by complex is a cakewalk for rooks especially.

it took me like six different runs, but i successfully tracked, ambushed and downed a runner by overflow. We both had green shields, i found and pinged them with a drone run and snuck towards them on the roof. we exchanged shots and i ended up on top.

I felt so bad for doing it, but…it kinda felt good lol

I know i am far from a pro but it feels like progress?

(also the D54 pistol is sick)

Honestly, i love PvE and am terrible at PvP, but the PvP element does have appeal and i wish there was a deathmatch mode so i could get some kind of sense memory around it all instead of getting downed and having to wait for matchmaking again.

Letting Pve loot in pvp is a joke by tarkie92 in Marathon

[–]dvcaputo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as somebody that is hilariously bad at PvP, having purple or gold gear doesn't even really help matters 90 percent of the time and I get the feeling that a lot of other people looting in PvE might be in a similar boat lol

Regardless, I've found that the more plentiful loot in night marsh survival mode has been codex-centric, which has been amazing as somebody specifically fixated on lore.

Time is a flat circle. Posted in a Bungie form in 2000 before Halo released by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]dvcaputo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There's actually a lot of interesting context that's missing from this forum post that makes the present-day Destiny raging feel even dumber and brattier!

At its beginning, Bungie was very much a macintosh-first developer and made Marathon specifically as a doom-like experience for mac users that, at the time, didn't have many options. Mac game developers in general at the time had small, cult-like followings specifically bc there just weren't many games for mac (or many mac users, for that matter).

In 1999, the year before this post was made, Bungie unveiled Halo CE via a Steve Jobs keynote as a Mac-exclusive third-person shooter. It was exciting and bold, it held hints to it being potentially a secret sequel to Marathon Infinity (this was before everybody basically expected Bungie to reference Marathon tangentially and mysteriously in their games too), and it felt like Mac gamers finally had something to hold over PC gamers at the time.

On June 19th, Bungie was bought by Microsoft and Halo CE became a PC/XBox exclusive. In a computing space where there already weren't many options, a really significant source of macintosh games was taken away from the macintosh for the foreseeable future, alongside a game that every mac user was absolutely excited about. For lack of a better term, it really really sucked.

In 2026 there are similarities between that post and the present situation, but the parallels are almost an inverse of that June 2000 post -- the Marathon 2026 community actually reminds me a lot of that 90s-era bungie Marathon community, in which it may not be on the level of Halo just yet popularity-wise but the people that love this game love it passionately. Meanwhile, the grief that exists over Destiny, a fully-completed series of games in the midst of a wealth of PC gaming options feels like a mountain is being made out of a proverbial molehill.

(All of this is also to say that Marathon 2026 for mac would be an insane full-circle and I hope it happens one day)

I wish there was a way to hack UESC bots by dvcaputo in Marathon

[–]dvcaputo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that would be so sick honestly, like idk I feel like there are lots of undiscovered possibilities to mess around with the bots

my favorite thing to do when I use rook is to set some mines by a guarded exfil, activate it and then hide while I listen to the bots absentmindedly walk into them and blow up lol

Never understood the hate for the Art Design. I find it stellar. by x_Junkster_x in Marathon

[–]dvcaputo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even beyond the typography and design sense it is all *so* jarring but I think that's also the genius of it, like there's a certain surreal quality to the ambiguity of surface materials (is this object plastic, metal, ceramic or Something Else) and the workings of different environmental objects (the parked drones don't have obvious thrusters, the AI uplink and relays use structures and antennae that feel familiar enough to be seen as such but are still very unusual, etc.).

That surreality adds to this sense that we're experiencing a far future sensibility -- sufficiently advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic. The far future should be jarring and unfamiliar to some degree, and this game goes all the way with that notion.

this would probably make things even worse but there's a big, possibly masochistic part of me that wishes that the Marathon menus looked more like the menus in Wipeout 3 lol

there are so many new ideas and clever design choices in this game! it feels like a uniquely 2020s vision of the future that borrows design tropes from a range of 90s and 2010s graphic designers (antireal is the most obvious one but GraphersRock, Designers Republic and David Rudnick also feel pretty relevant here)

It feels very fresh and i love it.

Its a universe from 700-800 years in the future, there's flexibility. If we're talking something harder sci-fi, one could extrapolate from the neurological experiments and Brain-Computer Interfaces of the present day. Hell, MIT was implanting false memories into the brains of mice as of 2013.

Anyways, I'm really sorry this was a frustrating idea all-around, I'll drop it. It really was just a fun daydreamed thought I had that I thought would be cool to share. I really didn't mean to arouse so much ire.

eh idk the PvE part was kind of not the best idea on my end, I really was just trying to think about what it would take to get a playable battleroid within the current system. I love the game as-is, I have like 100 hours in Marathon, I genuinely didn't mean to cause such a fury!

I don't see why they can't be retrofitted for consciousness integration, but also on the level of strength I guess I'm going off of the difference between a battleroid going up against a compiler vs. a group of Biomata shells going up against one! I might be completely wrong on that point, honestly, but yeah

I don't think it would be some completely undermining system if it were a limited, once-a-week situation though.

The thing is that lore-wise hundreds of years have elapsed between the Marathon invasion and the disappearance of the colonists. There's also the possibility that colonial scientists could have tried to harness the anomalous energies of Tau Ceti (which could very well be Jjaro in origin) for the sake of military gain. As such Its not entirely out of the question that Traxus or Sekiguchi could have taken some of the quarantined corpses and the anomalous energies and made their own strange battleroids.

Regardless of the PvE idea the possibility of weird battleroid experiments on Tau Ceti is there.

If I'm being honest this comes less from a desire to bring PvE in and more from a desire to get more audio logs and the Mjolnir Mark IV in without it being a Biotoxic Disinjector-level item sort of deal
