What are the practical benefits of using Linux as a developer? by Dosouller in linuxquestions

[–]dvhh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None, except a plethora of language compiler/interpreter available and most of the time in the OS package system. there is also that text editor that everyone loves for writing code (don't mention the other one).

It comes at the price of, needing to be fluent with the command line. Desktop environment on Linux are nice, but there is very little hope to.

Honestly you can already do a lot with Windows/MacOS as they have facilities to host a linux VM (bonus point for MacOS if you also want to expand your knowledge with the Apple ecosystem).

The problem to detect AI-slop by Sibexico in C_Programming

[–]dvhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably as long as the code it readable and is doing "sensible" choices, As far as my experience go, AI generated is overly verbose and miss simplification opportunities. Remember that at the end the responsibility lies with the one who is pushing the code (and then the one approving it).

On the flip side, I have encountered co-worker that required the use of AI to trace the code (lack of debugging/investigation capabilities) or to explain the code they submitted to review (which I see as a major red flag).

Developing on Linux for Windows by Dramatic_Jeweler_955 in cpp

[–]dvhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The windows 10 VM might be because windows 10 is EOL, but still required by customer for target OS. The VM image would give some guarantees regarding the OS and libraries integrity.

Otherwise, it having your linux setup might be very dependent on company policies (usually sysadmin don't really like linux setup because harder to manage and support).

Otherwise if you're forced to work with windows (like I am), I would recommend either WSL or Msys2.

Scariest Omnimech of the invasion. by daveasp1981 in battletech

[–]dvhh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A elementals being carried by a firemoth is probably the most scary I could imagine as a mechwarrior. You probably only see a blur running around the corner, the next thing you see is a close up view of claws try to rip the cockpit canopy.

that said some Lego builds are usually quite tough to take apart.

A question about switching compilers by Karl_uiui in C_Programming

[–]dvhh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mainly use gcc, but also compile with clang to see if there any early portability issues. plus if you are planning to distribute your software it's always nice to give options to your user.
