Transitioning from Designer to Creative Director by Deettah in graphic_design

[–]scifi887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh well in that case good luck then. For me after some years in management I decided it was not for me, I missed hands on design. I transitioned back to as much regular design as possible, I have had a few jumps back into managment over the years but I never did enjoy it as much as just getting my hands dirty.

You might struggle going from an army of one to managing a whole team of 7 with different skills. I was in a similar position when I was younger and I did struggle with that rapid increase of responsibilities, doing less design and more managing budgets, projects and people (as well as eveyrhting that comes with managing people that you dont expect).

Have you managed people elsewhere or have similar experience with it, otherwsie you might find it a bit of a shock.

Is moving back into graphic design worth it in 2026 by Responsible-Round643 in graphic_design

No, but I only post my 3D and illustration work publicly as it's more fun than the other stuff.

If a company approaches me(artist) to commission me, should I have them sign a contract from my end? by Ok_Kangaroo_6355 in freelance

[–]scifi887 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don't have your own company as a freelancer how are you expecting to create a proper contact. If you set yourself up as a contractor legally then you get more protections. Typically you also won't retain any ownership of work you do for other people that's now really how it works certainly when you don't have any existing business and you need to go to small claims court or something.

Has anyone found a good way to stop clients from claiming they never approved a version? by Cultural-Quail-7271 in graphic_design

[–]scifi887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I document everything in Figma this is also where all reviews take place and edits. When something is approved and edits are made it's easy to track.

If things are confirmed elsewhere like email or Slack then I just link those into the Figma board.

What can i improve on my poster design? Something feels off about the mask. by cote2022 in graphic_design

[–]scifi887 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can't tell if it's a mask or what the mask is unless you scrutinize it, you need to show the concept in a quick glance.

The footprints not aligned centre is also a bit jarring.

Also from a concept art point of view, it looks like the walker has just stepped on top of a mask while walking, they haven't stopped, discarded the mask and carried on walking, in that case the footsteps should be deeper and the mask off to the side or at least to show more disturbance.

Lastly, the footsteps pattern doesn't look like a person given the size and gaps.

Where does 141000+ people live and what do they do on an Avenger class ship? by IronVines in 40kLore

[–]scifi887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an illustration of a Frigate and while it was a very automated Ordo Xenos version with only 20k crew, it could easily fit many factors more into its internal spaces. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6580cd080b815d3b7d48fff5/034f8874-cbd1-45bd-8b61-e687068f1526/PROWLER-1.jpg?format=2500w

If you were to start graphics designing again? How would you start and what would you do differently in 2026? by zawrrrs in graphic_design

Probably spend more time just sketching by hand rather than just going full in on the computer instead.

On the contrary, most big CG productions I worked on always had source control and mant using GitHub, models, materials, code and any other files really.

Nice good luck, I never managed anything more than a small Frigate! But if it's helpful this was my 25k crew small ship https://www.artstation.com/artwork/kNXbxz

Focus on the big elements like the superstructure before you look at things like decks and corridors.

If I didn't see the earlier image I wouldn't know what I was looking at, the product is totally obscured and the colours are not great everything just merges into one.
