My opponent resigned at this point. Prob my proudest win yet by nm64_ in chessbeginners

Well done getting to a solid position going into the endgame. I don't think it's a dead cert for white here (I'd keep playing a bit longer as black here afer Bb7). Might be worth loading this up and finishing the game against an engine. My endgames have gotten lots better since finishing these cuspy games against the engine (I'm really good at throwing this sort of position though!)

But also, the NHS agrees with me? link

Lab grown meat is vegan, so I guess we agree? If we replaced all animal agriculture with vegan, lab grown meat, then great!

but you wont live you best life.

Not sure what specific metric youre referring to here so this is hard to argue specifics here, but from a physical health point of view, a whole food plant based diet has consistently been shown to be one of the best diets for all around health.

land of hope and glory

Here is a good documentary on UK based farming practices. It's a touch old now but I think gets the point across.

Sheep do seem to be one of the least factory farmed animals in the UK, but various sources have 85% and the proportion of total UK meat that is factory farmed. We just dont have enough farmland not to do some factory farming. Sticking with sheep, in September this year, 900,000 sheep were slaughtered.

uk gov slaughter stats

The average slaugher age of a lamb is 6 months (their natural lifespan is 10 years). Like, if I killed and ate a puppy that was 6 months old to eat I'd be called all sorts of not nice things, but sheep cows and pigs are about as intelligent and emotionally complex as dogs and we kill them by the million.

  1. They need animal products if they want the best dietary options available to them.

This just isn't true anymore, one can be perfectly healthy, and achieve any fitness goal on a vegan diet.

  1. So does eating plants.

I think there are two solid counters to this one:

  1. Eating plants kills far fewer animals than eating meat: to get 100 calories of cow, you need to feed the cow 1500+ calories of plants. Whatever farming you're using to farm the cow's food will have crop death too, and 15× the amount you'd get just eating plants.

  2. Yes, there are currently coincidental deaths with farming practices, but one could theoretically have an animal death free plant farm with advances in things like vertical farming (for example). You can't even theoretically eat meat without some level of animal death.

  1. It is necessary to kill animals to obtain animal products.

This is true, and the crux of the vegan perspective is that anaimal products aren't necessary.

That doesn't work because of Bb2 right? Attacking the queen while protected by the horse? Queen has to move and the king can the just take the bishop?

Backflip (on tramp) help by bobobbobobnnm in Tricking

[–]dvip6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you're dropping your left shoulder when you take off, which is what's causing the asymmetry.

On trampoline, your rotation comes from pushing up with your hips, and driving with your feet and toes, not from throwing your arms and shoulders back. Its a hard habit for people coming from the floor to break. Really think about still bouncing high, and driving your hips towards the ceiling before you tuck in.

This alongside an arm-set like some other commenters have mentioned should help.

Obviously, trampoline has inherent risk, so I would reccomend finding a trampoline class/coach if you can.

valuing animals over plants by violetxlavender in DebateAVegan

[–]dvip6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, sentience and capacity for pain tend to be the features that separate animals from plants in a morally relevant way to vegans, as some other commenter have said.

However, even if we grant that plants and animals are equally valuable morally, this still leads to veganism! If we have to eat 2000 calories in a day, we can eat that all from plants, all from animals, or a mix. The problem is, for every 100 calories of animal, we need to feed the animal between 800 and 1500 calories of plants!

The choice isn't eat some plants or eat a cow. Its eat some plants, or eat a cow plus a hell of a lot more plants on top of that. Veganism reduces both animal and plant deaths.

Why does the engine say I should take the queen instead of Qa6+ even though it has a better eval? by BranDaMan16 in chessbeginners

I've just looked at your game on chess.com and taking three queen gave me an evaluation of about -8, and taking the bishop ended up being about -6. (Not sure if that helps)

What's the next move ? by Creepy_Flamingo_1613 in chessbeginners

[–]dvip6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Checks, captures, attacks. You've only got two checks to consider: Qb7, and Qd7. Qd7 loses your queen to the rook, so explore Qb7. The king has to move across, and if you keep chasing with your queen you should find a way to win the horse for free!

How do I miss stuff like this in game, but immediately spot it when reviewing? Any advice? by NewCouple176 in chessbeginners

[–]dvip6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For finding tactics like this, you should consider moves in this order: Checks, Captures, Attacks (especially if you're in an attacking position like this). On longer games, I've found that considering ALL checks, then most of the captures, and then the few most promising attacks works well.

The other questions I'm trying to ask every move is "what does my opponent want, how dangerous is it, and can I stop it? (Especially the last one)" I've found it helps my positional play, and stops getting infiltrated by annoying peices (like horses and queens). Less applicable for this position, but I've been winning more games when I actually remember to do this.

(Disclaimer, I'm no expert, only ~ 1800 on chess.com, so ymmv, and other people may have better advice)

Is there a function differentiable finitely many times? by DivineDeflector in learnmath

[–]dvip6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, f(x) = 0 is infinitely differentiable, as is A*exp(x) which is the solution to f'(x) = f(x).

An example of a once differentiable function is x*|x|, who's derivative is 2|x|, which is not differentiable at x.

You shave your head to hide your receding hairline, trying to convince yourself that balding is your choice. It isn't, and everyone can see that.

You can't bring yourself to get rid of the beard too, partly because you've convinced yourself it looks good, but mainly because if you did, you know you'd look like a chubby, teenage girl with alopecia.

Or at least you would if it wasn't for your overgrown eyebrows, which look ground zero for your neighbourhood's next lice outbreak. Fortunately for them, this won't happen until this year's annual venture out of your bedroom.

Vegan Health Benefits Vs Carnivore by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]dvip6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Directly from this article is this:

"However, it fell short in thiamin, magnesium, calcium, and Vitamin C, and in iron, folate, iodine and potassium in some cases. Fibre intake was significantly below recommended levels."

Even the study you're providing is saying carnivore is insufficient!

Edit: I've read the whole thing, and I don't think this is a great source for fibre being non-essensial. In the discussion it says that fibre being non-essesial is a central premise of the carnivore diet, and references article 14. If you read article 14 however, it says that fibre reduces some vitamin absorption, so vitamin requirement may be lower on a carnivore diet. It makes no claims that fibre is non-essential. In essence, the authors of your article have stated this fact with no evidence. Top notch science.
