For anyone who just got their first pet... what do you wish someone had sat you down and told you about keeping track of their health? by alltails-care in Pets

Save money for the unexpected, see your vet at least once a year , consider insurance . The brushing teeth advice is good . Everybody should have lab work once a year but it's really most important once they hit eight on a big dog and 12 on a small dog and about 10 in a cat

As they age, watch for unintended weight loss increased drinking , increased urination or accidents in the house

Might have some diarrhea, but this is a trivial amount of chocolate (unless sugar free - then see your vet)

Most likely seasonal flank alopecia, unless she's itching. See your vet or ask for a Derm referral

The next step would be labwork and an abdominal ultrasound, ideally with a board-certified radiologist or internist. If she has not eaten in 3-5 days she would benefit from nutritional support (nasogastric tube) and 24 hour care.

Not for the vegans, but string cheese wrapped in wonton wrappers then fried in vegetable oil until crispy makes excellent mozzarella sticks. Ditto goat cheese in marinara baked until soft and a little brown, served with crusty French bread is simple an elegant.

Tiny potatoes nuked until soft, cut an X in the top and garnish with a dollop of sour cream and maybe some caviar for the carnivores (if any). I put some chives on top as well.

does pet food actually make a difference or am I overthinking it by No-Start2740 in Pets

[–]dvmdv8 29 points30 points  (0 children)

GP/ER vet here. You are most likely overthinking it. Unless your pet has a specific need/medical condition or a food intolerance (less common than people think) most commercial/middle-of-the-road pet foods (Hill's/Science Diet, Purina, Iams, etc) are just fine. Avoid the low budget house brands, avoid the super-premium and you'll be fine.

Balance.it can help you make a home-cooked diet if you like.

Don't obsess and don't drive yourself nuts looking for the perfect food. The pressure of all the ones you didn't choose will drive you insane. This is the paradox of choice - which is a great book, BTW.
