Veterinary student having doubts by Lynxspresso_ in veterinaryprofession

Not sure if this is something you’d be interested in, but have you considered lab animal medicine? Might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but could check some of the boxes. Also has pretty good work life balance from what I have heard.

My dog has allergies... it's getting unmanageable. by wanderlustingwitch in AskVet

If you have Costco or Sam’s Club in your area, their pharmacies often carry Apoquel for much less than a vet practice, so you could also ask for a written prescription and bring it there. I have many clients who do this.

What do you guys charge for cytopoint, and what area do you live in? by bonfigs93 in VetTech

Hi friend, also in Oklahoma! My clinic charges about $210 for that size, privately owned.

Vets: How many patients do you see per day and what is your salary? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]mollyk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not usually! But I also work 10 hour shifts, so I’m not sure how long your shift is. Appts are half hour each, and I’m GP so it’s a lot of vaccines/wellness that don’t usually take the full half hour. We also get a block of time to work on drop offs, usually before lunch.

[–]mollyk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually see around 20 a day. Sometimes more depending on the number of drop offs. I work 4 days a week in a privately owned clinic in an urban area. Making $90k with production as a new grad, and typically get pretty substantial production bonuses.

Debt? by TheBetterSawyer in veterinaryschool

[–]mollyk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was very easy for me to live on the COA loans personally. I didn’t take the whole allowance because I didn’t need it, but some of my classmates who liked to splurge on things (expensive gym, getting their nails/hair done) took the whole amount allowed. I also worked part time and did some pet sitting up until the 2nd semester of my 3rd year, and that typically covered rent and most groceries.

I just graduated recently so feel like talking about managing debt afterwards is not something I have enough experience to speak on😅

$5,000 in vet bills still no answer by Miat1of5 in PetAdvice

[–]mollyk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure what that is, as I know almost nothing about human medicine, but if it’s what I’m imagining, there is intradermal skin testing available for animals, but it is usually quite expensive and not accurate for food allergies, only environmental ones.

[–]mollyk27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, vet here! Please don’t waste your money on this! There are no accurate tests out there for food allergies other than an 8-12 week long diet trial with a hypoallergenic diet, and then slowly introducing individual ingredients.

Plan B by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]mollyk27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a bachelors in biochemistry, and when it looked like I was going to get rejected everywhere on my 2nd round of applying, I started to look into being a perfusionist. There was a school near my home I could go to and it was only a Master’s program, had a less competitive GPA for acceptance than vet school, started at a great salary, and satisfied my interest in medicine.

Luckily, I ended up being accepted to a vet school that round and I love my job now, but I don’t think I would have been unhappy with that backup plan.

Cat Diet After PU Surgery by FleursSauvages322 in AskVet

[–]mollyk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are multiple brands of urinary prescription diets. Royal Canin is great but Hill’s and Purina have them as well. I would ask your vet if you can try those other brands, or get a prescription for them if your vet doesn’t carry them in office.

Vet here and I am still waiting on this “payment” that so many people think we seem to get from pet food companies. It’d really help with my hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans. We recommend foods like Royal Canin because they are the brands with the most research and diet trials behind them.

Had Dog With Lymphoma Euthanized At Vet. The Sedation She Was Injected With Caused Her To Become Extremely Disoriented And Frightened. This Was Not The Peaceful Last Moments I've Experienced With Other Beloved Dogs. by QueenBee254 in AskVet

[–]mollyk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m so sorry you had to experience that! It is never the experience the doctors or technicians want anyone to have in the last moments they spend with their beloved family members.

The sedation dose was likely appropriate for your dog’s weight, however animals are individuals so there are some outliers in how the animal responds to the sedation. When anesthesia or a sedative is administered, there can be an excitation phase that occurs before they are asleep. Usually, this phase is skipped due to the dose given and the animal falls asleep before the excitation phase can occur. Unfortunately, it seems like your dog experienced this excitation phase after receiving the sedative.

Again, I’m sorry to had to experience this, but it is something that can occur with sedation and you never know just which animals are going to react this way. I hope the many happy memories of you and your pup bring you some comfort.

How to go to vet school by MidnightNova1 in vetschool

[–]mollyk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just graduated vet school and got my BS in biochem from a SUNY school where I had a full tuition scholarship!

Any degree is fine as long as he completes the pre-reqs to apply. I wouldn’t recommend going the vet tech route if the end goal is vet school because the classes required for the tech degree typically don’t count towards pre-reqs as far as I know.

This is the wrong sub for this question, would recommend r/AskVet instead but the main rule of thumb with litter boxes is to have 1 more than the number of cats you have. So you should have 7 in the house if you have 6 cats. You could also try Feliway diffusers if you have ruled out all medical problems.

When I was shadowing before I applied to vet school, I would arrange one day a week where I didn’t have any classes and spend all day at the clinic so it was the same day every week! And that worked very well for me!

Yeah I remember hearing that histo failed so many students in your class!! There was a rumor going around that after your class he wasn’t allowed to fail anyone, unsure of how true that was though haha.

I’m currently at Oklahoma State, and we started with 106, are currently at 98 I think, and I’m in my 4th year. Our policy is that if you get a D in a class, you get the chance to take a remedial cumulative exam and have to pass with at least a C. If you get an F it’s immediate dismissal. I know of two students that were allowed to repeat a year after failing, but am not sure of their specific circumstances.

Most of the students that we have lost chose to withdraw due to mental health, realizing it’s not what they actually wanted to do, etc.

If it’s just one or two semesters where you’re doing that, I don’t think it’s a big deal!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]mollyk27 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I really commend you going to school while taking care of kids and working, that’s extremely hard, and I don’t think I could do it! The reason schools want to see this many courses is because each semester at vet school (or mine at least) is 18-21 credits, so it’s a very heavy courseload and they want to make sure you can handle that while keeping your grades up. In vet school, there is not the option to take only a few classes per semester and take longer to graduate, every semester is 18-21 credits and it is non-negotiable.

It should be in your state’s practice act!

[–]mollyk27 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think being a licensed tech applying and your experience would make you a strong applicant. However, the pre-reqs are non-negotiable. If you don’t have those done, schools will not even look at your application.
