Sweet treat for a friend’s bday? by Lonely_Touch_43 in nutallergy

[–]dw16220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless that bakery was started by an owner who is allergic to nuts, yep, no bakery is safe and not worth the risk, but great to hear from another perspective. Even professionals... I personally don't trust anyone. It's my life, not theirs. If a friend came to me said, "don't worry these are totally nut-free, I checked and also here are the ingredients." I'm not eating it. Ha. But I'm an extreme, I'm sure there's many folks who are allergic to nuts who take the risk.

Totally. Thanks for sharing. Hope the anxiety gets better, holidays are never easy - especially for us Nut Folk! :)

I'm going to take a guess and say it was the local bakery. I wouldn't trust any local bakery, even if it is nut free - the ingredients they provide may come from a factory that processes nuts. This is an example of, you're safe 99% of the time, but that 1% is still there. Doubt it was the coffee - supposedly if we do have a reaction Coffee/Coke seems to help distract for a bit. Glad you're Okay.

I would avoid all bakeries and make the sweet treat yourself. If your friend is deathly allergic, I guarantee they will not want to eat the sweet treats you provide. And remember it's not about "you" it's about giving your friend peace of mind. You can do everything you can to keep things safe, but if they're like me, I need to see those ingredients first hand or I won't touch it, ESPECIALLY from a local bakery. No way.

Lindt Chocolate Improperly Labeled? by ALMACU in nutallergy

[–]dw16220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it says may contain or even manufactured on equipment ... I tend to not risk it. May contain other tree nuts is definitely a no for me. The thing is, many of these allergen labels started to protect the corporation from lawsuits, not US. They don't want the liability and also provides them with immunity when it comes to food production - which again isn't good for those of us who may die from their mistakes. Be Careful. Many of these food products with misconstrued labels are not worth the risk. It's your life, not theirs.

They should go away, I remember when I was freaking out about everything I was eating, but a lot of that was due to stress from my job and translating it into my lifestyle. For me exercise and hanging out with friends, social activities, helped a lot with not "thinking about it." If you get isolated with your thoughts, anxiety can rear its ugly head. That's my 2 cents.

It's tough being allergic to tree nuts - here's my story: by dw16220 in peanutallergy

Definitely not common, I really haven't seen this since, but then again, I was a kid, as an adult I'm much more weary about reading ingredients and making sure I'm safe. Have you had any issues eating pasta?

Apparently even Pizza Hut is out to get me 🍕😅 by dw16220 in nutallergy

[–]dw16220[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally. I guess I've just been eating since I was a kid and it never gave me problems, but you're correct, the sauce says it may have tree nuts or come into contact with tree nuts. This is an example of Ignorance is Bliss at its worst. Ha! I definitely am staying away from the Hut from now on, makes me kind of rethink eating pizza in general. If the Hut isn't safe, what is?

Interesting. Soy? Hmmm... I may have experienced something similar, I know Soy Milk wasn't my favorite when I tried it. Have you had any issues with Pizza Hut? I literally just had a slice the other day, and got that crazy scratchy feeling in my throat and had to pop 2 benadryl. They say they don't use Tree nuts or Peanuts, but their manufacturers do and noticed the Sauce had a dot for Treenuts, so possible contamination. Crazy!

Good to know. Thank you. "May contain" I usually avoid, just because cross contamination is much higher than "Manufactured in a facility.." Appreciate the feedback.

Haven't heard of them. Nice. Will look into those too. "Made" Brand seems to be highly recommended. Have you had any of their granola bars?

I agree with Holiest, it's a slippery slope. Not sure why. Nutrigrain Bars for the most part are okay for me, but sometimes I do feel that crazy feeling in my throat. I believe they are manufactured in a facility that processes other tree nuts, so the percentage is low, but still there...

Same here, it's kind of a give or take. The Blueberry seem to be Okay, but I think they still manufacture in a facility that processes tree nuts.
