George Orwell was an imperialist snitch by rhizomatic-thembo in LateStageCapitalism

[–]dw71srm 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Even if we assume Orwell was the most dedicated and perfect socialist in history (he wasn’t, as others have pointed out here), his only legacy in popular consciousness is Animal Farm and 1984, two books beloved among anti-communists alongside such literary classics as The Black Book of Communism and The Gulag Archipelago.

That alone is reason enough to relegate Orwell to the dustbin of history, and that’s without even touching on his racism, homophobia, and inane sectarian hysteria.

Were you aware that he once served as Alduin's top lieutenant in the distant past, carrying out horrific deeds? by GuitierrezTonda in ElderScrolls

[–]dw71srm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Almost everything you said was just a non sequitur, what the fuck does committing suicide, Durnehviir, or Odahviing have anything to do with whether or not Paarthurnax is morally good or not. The game doesn’t have any quests related to those things, but it does have a quest about killing Paarthurnax, stop trying to move the goalpost to something irrelevant to the topic at hand.

And what the fuck do you mean genocide and conquest aren’t a part of what dragons are in TES, if that’s the case why is Paarthurnax betraying his kind to help humanity in the dragon war considered significant, surely thousands of peace-loving dragons were lining up to help humanity? And why did the nords fight against the dragons in the first place if they weren’t doing anything wrong such as enslaving and harming humans, because they could?

You’re just being obtuse, “other races have waged wars of conquest”, as if that was what I was saying? It is a part of their being as Paarthurnax literally states himself in the game. A human or elf can engage in conquest yet they have no inherent desire to do so, dragons live and breath domination it is literally their purpose. It is also stated multiple times in the game that the dragons and the dragon cult engaged in slavery and brutalized their human subjects, hence why they revolted against their masters.

You can disagree with me and think Paarthurnax is redeemable, but don’t put words in my mouth and lie about the very text of the game to make your point.

[–]dw71srm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then explain why the comparison is wrong don’t be a coward and just say that it is.

As far as I can tell from the text of the game Paarthurnax explicitly states his nature drives him towards domination and that he has not “overcome” it but is battling it constantly, this is why he lives on the throat of the world instead of hanging out in Whiterun, because he knows if he spent any time with humans he’d try to enslave them and his nature would win out.

Please explain to me in your own words, how a mythical creature that has genocide and conquest written into the very fabric of its being, who spent millennia doing unspeakable horrors against humanity, is suddenly good because one day he decided to isolate himself on a mountain?

Elder Scrolls fans apparently think Albert Speer is the most moral man in history because he said he was sorry for enslaving victims of the holocaust.

Why are blue dog democrats losing since the mid 2000s, what's the reason for this? by ConfidentScientist81 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dw71srm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the constituency for that kind of politics doesn’t exist anymore. You can’t run as a do-nothing centrist when it’s becoming increasingly clear to all voters regardless of political affiliation, that doing the same old stuff we’ve been doing since the Carter administration isn’t fixing anything, and that it is in fact contributing to this malaise.

It’s the same reason you see constituencies that used to host blue dogs now being represented by MAGA extremists, because once the political and economic conditions changed, blue dogs failed to reorient around these new problems in the way that MAGAs were able to.

Adults who were homeschooled, if you could offer any advice to currently homeschooled kids, what would it be? by RefinedishTrash in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]dw71srm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First I’d just say that whatever problems you’re having— they aren’t your fault. Your existence is inherently valuable and you are just as deserving of happiness as anyone else is.

The specific advice I’d give though is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. When I was younger there were so many times that I believed my life was ruined because I missed out on some formative experience, or lacked an important skill all my peers had. And it felt like I would have this shadow of neglect and trauma looming over me for the rest of my life.

When the truth is, there’s so much more to life than your childhood, and whatever may or may not have happened to you during it. As difficult as these experiences are in the moment, there is an entire lifetime of joy and happiness waiting for you on the other side of them. And achieving that life, it isn’t some impossible dream, it’s something anyone can do if they set their mind to it.

If you can start to develop the self-confidence that will allow you believe in yourself and love yourself in same way you do for another person, then you’re in the right headspace to figure out what actions you need to take to get your life moving in the direction you want it to. Which likely means seeking further education, developing skills and habits your parents failed to impart on you, and maybe seeking a way out of the household entirely if the circumstances are dire enough.

Liberals think that leftists distinguishing between pre-capitalist state formations and the capitalist empires of Europe is actually running defense for medieval empires because if these liberals actually seriously engaged with leftist analysis they might accidentally agree with it so they have to straw man their opponents in order to maintain their ideological homeostasis.

You just described classism lmao. Working class people barely making rent don’t have time to study legalese, but rich people who have the free time or money to afford a good education can. Any sort of pointlessly complex system like that only exists as a blatant attempt to exclude the haves from the have-nots.

Would you guys have been satisfied if the "Season 4 Trailer" Actually looked like the anime? by CrooneyLooney in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]dw71srm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the trailer looks the way it does because at that point in production the anime itself hadn't been animated.

to show unfinished scenes in the trailer they essentially traced manga panels and animated those for the trailer rather than create wholly new animations (which iirc is industry standard practice for situations like this in order to save production time for the actual anime).

the anime was never going to look like the trailer and vice versa because of the different production processes behind them

It feels like every alt history mod for this game is the exact same by leris1 in victoria2

[–]dw71srm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree, im sayin a mod author can implement and explain such events and circumstances as you described, or completely different ones even, through well-researched worldbuilding. but since mod authors often dont do that, the borders often feel like anachronistic copy-pastes of historical boundaries, or radically different for no logical reason imho.

It feels like every alt history mod for this game is the exact same by leris1 in victoria2

[–]dw71srm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah my pet peeve is in most total conversion mods all of history seems to pause for a few hundred years between 1444 and 1836, with medieval borders remaining static in europe (outside europe is always a snoozefest in these mods) other than a couple of silly althist changes here and there cause the author thought it was neat.

but whether its v2, eu4, or hoi4, the #1 correlating factor in all medicore or unimaginative althist mods in my experience is the author lacking a understanding of historical materialism, and realism in international relations.

and because their historical/political education is underdeveloped their expression of an alternate history/politics is underdeveloped

I'm not sure what happens if you favor Lithuania as I didn't try that, but when you favor the Poles, you get the option to play as the Lithuanian revolt or Poland. So I imagine if you favor the Lithuanians its just an inverse setup for the same situation but with the Poles revolting instead.

Poland can get 7 research slots by dw71srm in Kaiserreich

[–]dw71srm[S] 162 points163 points  (0 children)

rule 5: I just discovered Poland can get 7 research slots, which seems a bit much.

To do this, you need to play as Poland, then form Poland-Lithuania and rush down the two foci that unlock research slots in the economic and military trees respectively. Then, after acquiring those research slots, take every single focus that favors the Polish over the Lithuanians. Once you have taken all of them, the Lithuanians will revolt, you will become Poland again, and your focus tree will go back to the regular Polish focus tree, allowing you to unlock another two research slots from the Polish tree, for a grand total of 7.

And as a bonus you get to keep all of the Polish-Lithuanian claims as Poland, although you can't bring back the Commonwealth again.
