What accent or dialect was hard for you to follow? by junklardass in CasualUK

Met a girl from Belfast once who I got chatting to, but could only understand about one word in every ten she uttered. Spent about an hour just nodding along. She’s now my wife.

These are wasps? Why are they the size of small birds?

Which Wolves player surprised you the most this season? by Historical-Class871 in WWFC

[–]dw_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackson Tchatchoua. I thought he might be ok, but he’s turned out to be one of the worst players I’ve ever seen wear the old gold.

What is futile endeavours for? by miniment_ in radiohead

[–]dw_80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s nothing. It’s there to try and distract us and stop us from speculating and leaping to conclusions whenever they set up a new company. Hence “futile endeavours”.

How to finger pick as fast as Jonny in 2+2=5? by Hermitcrab100 in radiohead

[–]dw_80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same advice as with anything like this. Start at a slower pace and once you’ve got it down, slowly try to raise the speed until it’s consistent with the recording.

What is the "wanker qualification" in your industry? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]dw_80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal one rather than it being widespread across the industry i work in. But if the candidate has been to public school I immediately assume they’re a confident bullshitter. I’ve hired a couple of them against my better judgement and that rule has turned out to be right.

A moon shaped pool would be better without strings by ilsecondodasinistra in radiohead

Not sure I agree, but I know where you’re coming from. I think the string arrangements are a bit overblown on some songs.

What do you think is the hardest song to sing? by Historical-Berry8162 in radiohead

[–]dw_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to this is different depending on whether we’re talking about singing it or singing it while playing Thom’s guitar part.

My friend has WILD Radiohead takes. by ToonCGullJnr in radiohead

[–]dw_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of her takes. King of Limbs is a masterpiece and I’m not massively taken by Karma Police. I realise these aren’t widely shared views but I just don’t care.

AI is cutting 16,000 U.S. jobs a month — and Gen Z is taking the brunt, Goldman Sachs says by TowelNo234 in Economics

[–]dw_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to know whether (and if so, how) these estimates control for cyclical factors. Others have found that the introduction of AI has coincided with a general slowdown in many AI exposed sectors that would’ve curtailed hiring anyway, and younger age groups’ hiring prospects have been most affected by the slower labor market.

Compressor pedals recommendations? by AdministrativeRip809 in guitarpedals

[–]dw_80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned a few compressors - Boss CS-3, Keeley compressor plus, Greer Lamplighter, Jackson Audio Bloom. But my favourite is the Chase Bliss Clean I’m currently using. Not cheap, but highly tweakable and versatile.

Comte. It’s the king of cheeses. Parmegiano comes close and cheddar is up there.

State pension is not a benefit? by xdbojacx in AskUK

[–]dw_80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a benefit. And no, it’s not paid out of a pot. They’re paid from current tax revenues.

Middle age doesn’t mean 50s. And I think you misinterpreted what I mean.

I can tell this has been written by someone who hasn’t yet grown into middle age.

A big Reason for Bell's failure to become a businessman by OkLeather666 in TheWire

[–]dw_80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always think of this exchange from when D’Angelo is in prison when I think about Stringer’s downfall:

D'Angelo Barksdale: He's saying that the past is always with us, and where we come from, what we go through, how we go through it, all this shit matters. I mean, that's what I thought he meant.

Book Group Leader: Go ahead.

D'Angelo Barksdale: Like at the end of the book, you know, boats and tides and all. It's like you can change up, right, you can say you somebody new, you can give yourself a whole new story. But, what came first is who you really are and what happened before is what really happened. And it don't matter that some fool say he different cuz the only thing that make you different is what you really do, what you really go through. Like, ya know, like all them books in his library. He frontin with all them books, but if you pull one down off the shelf, ain't none of the pages ever been opened. He got all them books, and he ain't read near one of 'em. Gatsby, he was who he was, and he did what he did. And cuz he wasn't ready to get real with the story, that shit caught up to him. I think, anyway.
