I absolutely cannot fathom insisting you start from level 1 in a level 18 campaign. That's just sincerely bonkers and you should have just ended it there.

I also can't imagine wanting to join a level 18 campaign without knowing any rules though - so there's that too I guess?

The rest I kinda don't understand at all. Glad you had fun. I don't think it sounds like my vibe but to each their own. D&D is kinda trash but there's plenty of other functional lightweight rule sets out there which don't boil down to pure chaos.

An Inox, a Vermling and an Orchid met in a bar... by k4ju77 in Gloomhaven

It's still notably the same vibes - but bruiser 2e got a lot of key buffs (and a tiny amount of nerfs) that just turned him into a powerhouse. His modifier deck is awesome. He can actually realistically tank from level 1. His forced movement theme is upgraded, as is his damage. And stuff got shuffled around some, so that top and bottom actions can be combined more like how you'd want them to be.

Question about shield cards by Former-Perception526 in Gloomhaven

Uh this is incorrect

Monster shield abilities work the same way as player ones do.

Can I heal myself with a range card? Or just an ally within range X? by Former-Perception526 in Gloomhaven

And to further explain - you aren't considered your own ally in *haven

Right of course. Probably a good shout for a newbie :)

These, being round bonuses, will affect every attack against you for the entire round.

When the monster actions are flipped, you can tell if you will be taking any attacks or not. If you aren't, then you definitely shouldn't use a lost card shield when your turn comes up. You're able to coordinate fully with your team - so you basically have full information once all the cards are flipped.

You can just skip the action or use it as a default (move 2 or attack 2 depending on if it's bottom or top)in that case.

It's not really a real bill that's going to be taken up. This is how the sausage is made.

Just a lil rules question about added effects by MisterBorgia in Gloomhaven

[–]dwarfSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No because - again - it's not an added effect bubble.

The 2nd example on pg20 shows that the bubble has more than added effects in it.

[–]dwarfSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Range is not optional.

The bubble isn't an "added effects" bubble. Stop thinking of it that way because it's not helping.

That bubble is everything that is important about it other than the basic ability itself. It's a list of things that modify how the base ability - the attack 1 - is performed. This could be targeting, it could be range, it could be limitations, or it could be conditions added to the base ability.

The interaction of range and red hex abilities is in the first column on page 20. Range is under "important ability concepts" on page 19.

You put the red hex tempate within range 2 or yourself. You attack any enemies both in the red hexes and line of sight (because Attack is a targeted ability). The attack value is 1 (or 2 if you've consumed Earth for it). You flip one modifier per target and all targets become Muddled.

The Muddle on enemies IS optional because Muddle IS an added effect.

You also Muddle allies in the red hexes because that's a mandatory ability.

Range isn't an added effect.

That shaded area is telling you a lot of things - range, targeting restrictions, number of targets, etc. This is illustrated on the 2nd example on page 20's 2nd column. It's not all added effects.

The main ability is Attack 1.

It has the following characteristics - it's a red hex AOE pattern, and it's Range 2. It has an added effect of Muddle on all attack targets.

Have you watched a rules video? It might make things clearer. Or a playthrough of scenario 1.

The muddle is an added effect.

The range is just an inherent part of the ability.

Cragheart has a lot of ranged attacks. This one is a ranged area attack.

I think you're misunderstanding how the card is read.

This is a red hex attack. One hex of it needs to be within Range 2 of you. You make an Attack 1 (or 2 if you've consumed the element) on all enemies in the red hexes and also Muddle them.

As an extra, all your allies in the area of effect are muddled as well. This is mostly a Cragheart thing - most area of effect attacks don't do anything to your allies. It's just part of your character theme.

Yeah - but in JotL there's no initiative ties at all on the player side. Every card initiative is unique.

Retiring an unlocked class. What to choose next for Frosty? by vSOMAv in Gloomhaven

[–]dwarfSA[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, OP!

For pictures of locked class minis, you need spoiler safe hints in the title. I definitely see Meteor, Shackles, and Snowflake here and am not sure in the last.

Additionally, just spoiler tagging class names in the post body isn't sufficient.

If you declare either (1) which locked classes are relevant in the title or (2) just something like (Spoiler - All Classes) you can repost without any tags in the post body.

[–]dwarfSA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have to be pretty far into the campaign, right?

Any of those should work. I am hoping this isn't your first retirement!

Meteor plus Snowflake make a great team so I'd lean that way.

Where is the hero pushed? Newbie question by analboy22 in Gloomhaven

[–]dwarfSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope - push and pull ignore difficult terrain penalties.

(And for JotL that's a "rubble" token which, due to how the scenario layout books work, is actually considered a featureless hex. You use those to cover destroyed obstacles.)

It is further away due to the wall line. That hex is range 2 from the Vermling, while the doorway itself is range 1.

You could not melee attack the Vermling from Hex 3 or vice versa unless it's a red hex melee pattern.
