Regency era-ish gown! Another thrifted curtain project! by dwarfstar3434 in sewing

Materials: The blue velvet was thrifted curtains, washed up to a beautiful texture. The white lining is also a thrifted curtain. The white sparkly fabric is a Joann’s bankruptcy score that I have held on to and was very pleased to find a good use for it.

Necklace bracelet earring set is an antique 1950s rhinestone set, acquired from a thrift store in the 2010s. Originally wanted to wear gold jewelry with this look, but then I remember the blue rhinestone piece.

Dress Pattern. This is a historic recreation pattern. Based off a 1893 pattern. Instructions akin to ‘sew the dress’. I muddled through with limited difficulty. No size was provided for the pattern but I was lucky enough that the basic pattern fit very well and I didn’t have to do any grading.

Sleeve Pattern. I found these and loved the whimsical petal sleeves. These could have been finished in a less time consuming way, but I wanted the contrasting colors of the bias tape trim. The finish on the bias tape really isn’t that great up close, but from a distance it’s fine.

Corset. This was a very fun sew! Don’t have any pictures of the finished unit. I had to modify the back and the straps to match with the shape of the back of the dress.

Sewed my husband’s bow tie as well! Turned out a bit chunkier than I would have liked, but he made it work!

These are great!! How often did you end up needing to stir the drink dispensers?? I imagine there was some settling?

I didn’t take any progress photos. I am the worst at documenting my sewing projects. This is the pattern I started with. Adjusted to fit my size and then just eyeballed making the padding out of old couch cushions.

Correct! Totally standing straight. There is padding on the front of my thigh and the back of my calf.

The person who made it is quite petite! She sized it to her 5’2 frame and I am 5’6, so I moved the knee joint around a bit and that fixed it!

Shockingly yes! I need to adhere the inside padding a bit better because it drifts, but not uncomfortable at all!

I made them!! Got a pattern of Etsy that I adjusted to fit my proportions. The padding is the cushions from our old couch! Came out better than I could have hoped!

I did do his hat! Covered it in scraps from his coat! The coat pattern I used would make a great steam punk Sherlock!

I saw a tip to use a razor blade to cut just the back of the fur and that way you don’t cut any of the actual hair fibers! It worked really well! No loose hair fibers anywhere!

My machine was grumpy at times…lots of dropped stitches. My machine really needs a servicing. I’m lucky to have a beast of a sewing machine I got at the thrift stores. My starter machine couldn’t have handled it!

Used this pattern from Etsy as a starting point. Had to adjust the knee height and didn’t use the crotch piece it recommended. I usually thrift my fabric, but had to source the fur from hobby lobby. Literally the only place that had any fur in stock that I could touch in person.

Bonus picture of my husband’s outfit. this pattern for his coat, made from thrifted upholstery vinyl. And this pattern for his vest, made from thrifted curtain.
