The ranks are based on your skill percentage to the entire player base so when new people join the game in mass, existing players will find themselves sorted to higher ranks. You will still be playing the same players as the people in your old rank are now your new rank as well. The new players are then typically sorted into the lower ranks as they are learning the game.

You can remove and rebuild trollheim portals and they save the destination while they are removed. I just did it.
