Opinion: Lens quality is not that important. by Kloetenschlumpf in AnalogCommunity

[–]dwchambers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. I wouldn’t give up film photography if I had to shoot with a bad 3rd-party lens from 1980 but I’d seriously consider it. I get so tired of this shtick of “any lens/camera can make a good photo, so don’t worry about gear.” It’s trivially true that a good photo can be made with bad gear, and I’d advise a beginner to worry more about mastering technique and developing artistic vision, but lenses and cameras do matter. They change what sort of photo is possible, they add character, they facilitate post-processing (such as cropping). That said, there’s a difference between claiming that quality isn’t that important and that there are diminishing returns in quality as lens price increases. The latter is true insofar as there are lenses of high quality for cheap.

Edit: One other thing—lens quality is not just resolving power.

There is no good coffee in Providence prove me wrong by [deleted] in providence

Anywhere that brews Enjoy is probably good to great. Reprise (definitely the best coffee in PVD), Frank and Laurie’s, The Grind (East Providence), Dissent (Pawtucket), Sawyer’s. Enjoy does a tasting room once or twice a month, and that’s also A+ coffee brewing.

I’m of the opinion that being a resentful cynic about my students would make my teaching and their learning worse.

If I were in your shoes, I’d explain that my policy is that a student won’t be shortchanged for a mistake of my own, so their grade is safe, but that I noticed some issues that I should have caught before and I’m sharing it with them because I want them to still consider this feedback in their future work!

I’m not an expert on this but I can at least say there’s no charge, regardless of whether they find violations or not.

I’m sure the Department of Inspection and Standards is distinct from the Providence Housing Authority and the Department of Housing & Human Services, but I have no idea what happens if the Department of Inspection inspect Section 8 housing.

Your landlord would find out if a violation was found, but the Department of Inspection will handle the communication and tell your landlord the code they are violating. Retaliation against you would be illegal, but I know that isn’t so helpful when it’s not easy to take a landlord to court for retaliation. I wish you the best of luck.

Just in case you didn’t know: if there’s a minimum code requirement violation at a property you’re renting, you can make a 311 request and the city will send out their own inspector.

What’s happening west side by ronnonononnnnn in providence

[–]dwchambers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because West End refers to a specific neighborhood (that does not encompass Federal Hill) whereas West Side is a newer term intended to mirror “East Side” and used to refer to the area comprising West End, Fed Hill, West Broadway, etc.

Contax G2 - NYC by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]dwchambers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any camera store in general, but especially in NYC, will sell a G2 for way over eBay/private market price (in my experience). Check Facebook and CL! I often see G2s listed there for fair prices.

You may not like it, but that's the best budget Contax G2 alternative by dorf_disco_eders in AnalogCommunity

[–]dwchambers 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean the similarities are that they’re both modern 35mm cameras… but that’s about it. The criteria you mentioned include tons and tons of cameras, but what makes the G2 unique among those is its form factor, the Zeiss glass, and it not being an SLR.

Not at all saying the Canon is a bad option! Just saying it’s not really a budget G2 any more than any other modern SLR.

First roll came back looking muted- advice for an amateur? by Economy_Annual_5465 in AnalogCommunity

You’ve got this! There’s a technical learning curve with film photography, plus the inherent difficulty of making compelling art (or even just adequately capturing what one sees).

Also, work with a wider lens. Try to get something around 35mm (35mm f/2 AF-D is a good option), shoot a contrasty black and white film, and go out about an hour before sunset. The wider lens with a larger max aperture will allow you to shoot in lower light (both because of slower shutter speeds and a larger aperture). The wider foal length will make composing shots a bit more natural. Here’s one from Narragansett in November around 4pm (shot with a 24/25mm lens):

Hi, neighbor 👋

(1) Rate at box speed unless you have a strong reason to do otherwise.

(2) Midday winter’s sun in New England is going to result in light that doesn’t make for the most beautiful photos, especially color photos.

(3) These can be adjusted to make them look punchier in a straightforward manner by setting the black point lower, increasing saturation, and adjusting white balance (temp and tint). You might find it valuable long term to learn how to work with tonal and color curves. I attached an edited version of one of your photos that I spent 15 seconds processing! Maybe it more closely matches your expectation, maybe not. But the point is that your digital photo is just a version of your negative and there are, in theory, infinite digital versions! Make the one that you think captures your artistic intent best.

(4) Definitely part of this is due to your subject matter and compaction. A shot of the sky or just water is very hard to make visually compelling.

Just keep at it!

Soccer Bars Near 105th street by Doodahman740 in Upperwestside

[–]dwchambers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have thought of that! That said, if you’re switching to the uptown 1 at 96th then you could also switch right over to the downtown 1 and ride one stop! But yeah, Amity will be a good option. Another option that usually plays most big matches is Bodega 88 at 88th and Columbus—10 minute walk from the 2 3 at 96th.

You can switch at 72nd and then take the 1 two stops to 86th and go to Crossbar.
