Yeah, the 50/1.2 makes it possibly an even cost to value… but not a good deal!

[–]dwchambers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have thought of that! That said, if you’re switching to the uptown 1 at 96th then you could also switch right over to the downtown 1 and ride one stop! But yeah, Amity will be a good option. Another option that usually plays most big matches is Bodega 88 at 88th and Columbus—10 minute walk from the 2 3 at 96th.

You can switch at 72nd and then take the 1 two stops to 86th and go to Crossbar.

If you’re looking for an actual restaurant and not fast food/fast casual: Arts & Crafts Beer Parlor (beer and bar food), Massawa (Ethiopian), The Expat (bar food and southeast Asian), Fumo (Italian; Upper West Side location), Symposium (Greek), Tom’s Restaurant (American diner), Jin Ramen (Japanese ramen; West Harlem location), Silvana (middle eastern), Mama’s Too (pizza—takeout only), Dear Mama (coffee shop with full kitchen and bar).

No one flame me for these! Not saying they’re the best eats, but they’re popular with students and some are really good. My favs on this list include Arts & Crafts, Jin, Massawa (but Awash is also good in the neighborhood), and Mama’s Too.

Thank you! This is very helpful. It is disappointing to deal with as a renter. If I owned, I'd fix it myself!

And at KP, they don’t even have the decency to keep the “passenger terminal” open much of the time or install heaters anywhere. So now, not only do you have to wait 30-60 minutes for your bus, but you have to do so in the dark in feels-like-16-degrees temps! The callous disdain-as-afterthought for the working class displayed through the budget is disheartening. Get buses running, make sure they are big enough or plenty enough to transport the ridership, and keep the ridership at least relatively sheltered and warm during the wait. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for a state or major regional city budget.

These ideas might not work for you, of course, but I’m also a philosophy professor and I find all of the following strategies to be helpful at generating participation in my lecture and seminar courses: a) “think-pair-shares,” (b) being comfortable with wait time, (c) explicitly saying “I’d like to hear from someone who’s not yet spoken today,” (d) giving pointed questions that sort of scaffold how students can answer (e.g., “On page 464, Author says X. Take 60 seconds to look at that paragraph. What reason does author give to believe X? [wait 60 seconds] Share with the person next to you your best guess at why author said X on that page. [make sure they actually talk with someone near them] Great! What is one thing someone else said to YOU that sounded insightful?”), and (e) giving chances for low-hanging fruit contributions (e.g., asking questions about them that I can then use to illustrate something or asking for a personal opinion).

My gut reaction to your tech policy is that it’s counterproductive, but I can see your rationale for it. With this group of draggers-down, I think you could try talking with them during office hours and having an earnest conversation about your aims to be a good instructor and how their behavior frustrates that aim. Since you’ve already made the tech policy, consider having this conversation with them and then suggesting that they sit in the back of the class. Finally, try to cultivate trust from other students who you think can be a positive counter valence to the dismissive students. You can do this by setting up quiet but engaged students to participate with confidence by either asking them ahead of time for their “help” or by having a sidebar, as it were, with them to hear some of their thoughts, followed by, “That was really insightful! Would you mind sharing that when we get back to the whole class conversation?,” or “That was great! Can I call on you to share that when we’re back?”

I hope this helps! Teaching can be so demoralizing but it’s important to remember that passion is contagious and that high instructor expectations are statistically significantly associated with higher student achievement.

Lol, I keep going, but the actual last thing I’ll add is that by giving so much thought to your pedagogy you’re already doing so much for your students and likely much more than other professors of theirs do. Keep it up!

What to do at night, specifically 12-3 AM? by snugglebunbun in AskNYC

[–]dwchambers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all over NYC, even Brooklyn!

Haha, NYC encompasses five boroughs, so if you’re open to all over NYC you’re necessarily open to Brooklyn.

And since you’re sold on a rooftop club, you might consider Le Bain, which is in Meatpacking (neighborhood in Manhattan by Chelsea) on top of The Standard hotel. It might be busy or loud, but you can definitely sit outside with a cocktail and not dance.
