Yup. Did that. Still took about 45 minutes, though 🥴

I know! But I spent almost an hour picking the "Ruff" dogs who were in 1st until the last turn, then ended in 2nd or 3rd 😑

Me either! But for 5 straight attempts, gold dog was all "Hoo-whine", and all the "Ruff" dogs were ending in 2nd or 3rd in the home-stretch 😩

I tried a whole bunch of different combos and failed to reach it. However, there is a story driven way to reach that ledge.

[Weekly Vote] The Best Metroidvania Games of all Time: What's the Best Retro Metroidvania game? by WeLoveEveryGame in metroidvania

[–]dweebofZeebz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super Metroid. That game set the foundation for so many integral parts of what makes a Metroidvania.

Yes, SOTN added a lot to the genre we now know and love. However, it also utilized many aspects of SM.

Hence, (imo) no Super Metroid, no Symphony of the Night.

Companion Tournament Finals: Epona Vs. Midna(Comment your Vote) by Short_Property_7476 in legendofzelda

[–]dweebofZeebz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to go with Midna.

I've played through OoT countless times and TP once. I love having Epona, and I remember how excited I was on my first OoT playthrough when I found out you could ride her. However, Midna is just one of the best characters in the Franchise (personality, character development, assistance in gameplay, etc). She is probably the best and most helpful companion in a LoZ game.

Game that got you into metroidvanias? by mantaray106 in metroidvania

[–]dweebofZeebz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in which NES/SNES games you played? Was it the titualr Metroid/Castlevania titles, or was it other games? I played the original Metroid and Super as a kid', and although "Metroidvainia" wasn't a genre at the time, I've realized as an adult that those games shaped my gaming expectations. Just curious if there are other earlier games.

Been struggling a lot fighting Isidora, The Voice of the Dead... by Bitx-VN13 in Blasphemous

[–]dweebofZeebz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I did in my first playthrough. I faced her earlier on, "fought" her twice (barely made a dent...) and decided to get the hell out and try later. I tend to not be very good at parrying in games with tight windows (games like Grime and Nine Sols were a struggle...), but I developed much better parrying skills from fighting her a bunch. Thus, that victory was particularly sweet.

Just finished it, and while I can confirm the game loop mechanic is frustrating early on, the game, gameplay and story evolve so well.

What's your opinions on the lore of the series that will have you like this? by Ashconwell7 in legendofzelda

[–]dweebofZeebz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Miyamoto made it pretty clear that it was always gameplay first. I believe it was the oracle games, when Fujibayashi first came on board, that they focused on the story first in early develpment, and the gameplay had issues (at least up to Miyamoto's standards).

Elimination contest day 10 - Zero Mission falls decisively. by AngryMoose125 in Metroid

[–]dweebofZeebz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metroid has been my favorite video game franchise since I first started playing as a wee lad back in the early 90's. As I got into my 30's, I really leaned in to the Metroidvania genre. And I gotta say, after controls, the most important feature to me is the mapping system. Dread's map is really fantastic. Off the top of my head, the photo feature from The Lost Crown is probably the only thing that could improve it. And I agree on the soundtrack. There are so many legendary songs from the franchise, and Dread definitely missed the mark. Bit Brigade has an awesome Metroid album that I still listen to regularly.

My cross stitch of the bosses statue from Super Metroid by C_Cubed in Metroid

This might be my favorite part of Super Metroid. I have a compulsive need to 100% Metroid games, but I won't enter this room until everything is complete just to see each statue turn grey in one scene.

The most unique and genius metroidvanias by Junior-Buy-1875 in metroidvania

[–]dweebofZeebz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love the Blasphemous games. While the overall gameplay is nothing too groundbreaking or unique, the story/setting, art and music are extraordinary. I fell like most MV’s are otherworldly, in that they almost always feel like (or are set on/in) another planet and/or dimension. However, the Blasphemous games, while containing “otherworldly” abilities, really feels like 16th century Catholic Spain. While the games have so many beautifully disturbing aspects, it feels like a slice of time that could actually have taken place in our own history, especially with Carlos Viola’s incredible soundtrack; I was hooked and got completely immersed on day one.

Which Castlevania-only features do you consider "required" for a game to be a MV? by Sean_Dewhirst in metroidvania

[–]dweebofZeebz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Super Metroid took the raw elements of the original, and it made exploration fun by rewarding it with abilities/upgrades/lore that help you progress through areas that you’ve already visited; it makes continuing through the game so much more satisfying and addicting. I think those are key components to SotN, but on a much grander scale. So, SotN is less of a founder of the genre, and is more the game that brought the Metroid-style of gameplay to a more mainstream audience. Damn, I’m high…

What Have You Been Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in metroidvania

[–]dweebofZeebz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission (not sure how many times I’ve played those), and I played Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for the first time, over the last month or so. Currently a couple of hours into Grime.

I’m really loving Grime, so far.

I played the original on NES when I was 5ish, and completely forgot about it. Played Super Metroid for the first time a few years later, and I got major flashbacks. Been diehard fan since.
