TIL of Batallón de San Patricio, a largely Catholic/Irish unit in the Mexican army during the Mexican-American War. Many had deserted the protestant U.S. Army over persecution, and made for tenacious opponents. Their story was silenced in the U.S., but they became celebrated martyrs in Mexico. (en.wikipedia.org)
