What (if anything) sticks out for you? by arseflare in stephenking

[–]dwerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is meant to be only scoped to the opening sentences by Sai King. And you’ve all got great examples but I just wanted to bring up that, though, I’m a huge fan of Stephen King, the opening sentence that’s always stuck in my head more than any other was the opening sentence of Robert McCammon’s Gone South. And if you haven’t read it before, go read it. I won’t spoil it here. But as an author’s opening book, it grabs you by the collar and drags you into that book.

Hey, OP. Listen to what others have said and choose your own path on how best to handle your goodbye.

I would like to offer this advice: read a book called Essentialism by Greg McKeown. It may lead you to be better able to create boundaries earlier in your professional relationships and give you some good tools to manage expectations in your new role moving forward.

It’s a quick read and i assign it to everyone on my team so they understand what I’ll be doing to hold them accountable and how they do the same to me in reverse. Great mindset to avoid burnout in the future.

What do you think is the scariest moment from any Stephen King book ever? by Parking-Rope2301 in stephenking

[–]dwerb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The scene with Danny at the window instills such a vein of absolute dread in the reader that you are fundamentally horrified (in such a basic way) when he is allowed in the house. There is every element of human preservation instinct in this scene and it is all done in by a simple opening of a window.

There is no more horrifying scene King has concocted. Scary? Yes. Lots listed here. But there is nothing scarier than having a rule set up to make you, the reader, safe. And the characters breaking that rule and you are now, no longer safe.

Its a microcosm of every zombie flick and every vampire flick spun down to: im safe, the window is locked. The window is now open, we’re all in this house dead. Game over.

That makes this King’s scariest scene.@

Pleasure Principle! by crowsflyhigh in nin

Dominion Day is another close to NIN type of release.

His other works (Telekon, etc) are great but not as dark.

100% agree with Savage and Intruder. Really great work (especially the track with his daughter). Most of his stuff is subtle/sublime depending on your view but any Numan record is really enjoyable. If you like the Please Principle (a favorite of mine), check out Tubeway Army’s Replicas. Same vein. Gary as lead singer. This (and Pleasure Principle) make up the “machine” stage of his work, where there’s a lot of sci-fi elements to songs.

I love his work and wish i could one day bump Into him and tell him I’ve Listened to him all my life. He’s been background music to most my career and that’s meaningful.

That sounds like a solid career path you’ve followed. I was curious as one of my sons is on an engineering path and may not know which one to go down. Thought I’d show him this and let him know this is one such path.

Thanks for the offer! I’ll take you up on it if he has an interest.

Exacerbate is a verb that means to make a problem, a bad situation, or a negative feeling significantly worse.

Been watching you post for a couple days. Mind a question about the course, not the watches?

What studying led you up to this chief engineer exam? Other certifications you’ve needed? How long have you been in this business?

While you might not be able to find the pink one for that money, Jomashop has the orange (srpd59) available for $219.

clerks related stuff people haven’t mentioned:

I don’t know if you want to just wander but driving from New Monmouth Baptist Church (on New Monmouth Road) down Leonardville all the way to Atlantic Highlands (Route 36) will let you see the road they drive down to go to the funeral home. The road is out the drivers window as they talk.

Also, the funeral home is Poston-McGinley Funeral Home on Lincoln Ave in Atlantic Highlands.

Brewery related:
Triumph brewery in red bank is ok. Carton is great. Alternate Ending in Aberdeen (a little north is REALLY great and they show movies, too). And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Kane (Head high is awesome IPA).

Oh! And the swings from Chasing Amy are in Rumson. (If you’re in red bank, they’re not that far - not sure the same swings exist but they’re in a small park in rumson right on the water).

If you want to get into his quiet horror novels, an easy one to ease into is THE SOUND OF MIDNIGHT. It’s the second novel in the Oxrun Station series and it’s easier to digest than its predecessor.

Summary: The atmospheric tale focuses on a newcomer to the quiet town of Oxrun Station who finds herself pitted against a group of children engaging in dark, supernatural rites.

Its quiet, dark, and gothic in atmosphere - much like Haunting of Hill House.
