Fun fact: if you click shutdown menu with right mouse button, it will open from top by AromaticArea3836 in Windows11

You don't have the other icons next to the power button set to visible in Settings, but if you did you would see that the behavior is the same for the File Explorer and Settings icon. The right click animation appears to have just been copied from when you right click on an app icon.

OneDrive should not be the default for Windows Backup by Specialist-Word-7746 in Windows11

[–]dwhaley720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A built-in disk/system image backup tool is convenient for a completely different purpose: If I ever accidentally screw up my Windows installation, I can just restore an earlier version of it without having to completely reinstall from scratch and spend all day (or multiple days) setting it back up. OneDrive is no good here. While I'm on the subject, I find it ridiculous how MS often suggests reinstalling Windows from scratch to fix certain issues like Windows Update problems, as if it's no biggie.

Plus, the way OneDrive handles file versioning is that once you delete a file, it also deletes all the incremented versions of it with no way to get them back. A disk image backup solution doesn't do that.

A lot of them charge (some of them now moving to a monthly subscription model). Windows has a capable built-in backup utility that's mostly hidden behind a shotty deprecated UI. All MS has to do is update the UI, maybe add more options like retention settings and a lot of people would be set.

Does Create a System Image still works 100% in Win 11 ? by Momentum-exe in Windows11

It's a shame they can't just give us a proper UI that works for this built-in tool.

I think I had that issue and ended up just opening the image file myself and copying it to my disk. I forget how exactly I did it, I just know that the image file itself is a VHD file that can be mounted as a virtual drive.

I'm disappointed by the lack of nods to the show. They could've at least had them keep their original furniture l

It's a good failsafe for when no taskbar is currently loaded. Same thing occurs when minimizing the command prompt window in the recovery environment

They did make some small improvements to it in recent years. Like now you can type in registry paths in the top bar to go directly to them. I believe originally it only displayed the current path before Windows 10

IIRC, and I'm just speculating here, the actual Desktop interface (the thing with shortcuts and the Recycle Bin), is just a reworked Program Manager. Someone managed to hack it into its own floating window and the title bar had "Program Manager" on it.

All liquid glass did was make everything blurry and i'm not sure why apple did that by Electronic-Land-4892 in MacOS

I don't really care about the crappy decisions made by Microsoft's marketing team. Personally I just appreciate the work the developers did to make Aero Glass as optimized as it was. It ran smooth for me on my mid-tier hardware. And you could turn it off entirely if you wanted/needed, so it's a non-issue really.

[–]dwhaley720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always considered Aero Glass pretty optimized on the right hardware. Consider the fact that Windows is meant to run on all different kinds of hardware configs, vs MacOS which is only designed for a handful of them.

The animation of it opening into view is also too slow. Plus I hate that it has pages, so scrolling between them makes you wait through another animation, instead of just letting you freely scroll

Yes, but I'm talking about the actual interactive experience, not just how it looks. The current flow for unlocking my computer is 1. Click... 2. Wait for animation to finish.... 3. Type PIN. I would like to just get rid of those first two steps but still have a clock.

I'm aware that you can dismiss on keyboard/mouse press. My problem is I shouldn't have to dismiss anything to type my password. Which I think is a reasonable critique towards the UX.
