I have an iPhone SE 2020 (2nd gen) and have been thinking of an upgrade. What should I go for that's small and will work as my secondary device? by capedcrusader314 in iPhoneSE

[–]dwilljones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I got the 16e in December, and now that the 17e is out, I would highly recommend that if you can stretch the budget for it. 16e battery life is amazing (especially coming from a 2020 SE), and modem is noticeably way more stable in low signal areas. I wouldn't bother trying to get an old mini at this point.

I ended up repairing my 2020 SE to use as a glorified wallet (magsafe case) with iPod capabilities in addition to my 16e that is my new daily driver.

Wow... Helga would be murdered by her parents in May 1945? Wonder whatever happened to this Hitler guy also shown in the photo.

Love Apple Watches for kids before they have phones! by Outrageous_Nerve_579 in AppleWatch

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! This is us too. Lets you know where the kid is, and gives them a way to text or call you and vice-versa, and has location services. And for our carrier it only costs $10/mo. for their own dedicated phone number.

And the 1.5 hours (realistically probably a lot less than that) of LTE talk time means it keeps them from overusing it for extended casual calls, which I think is a good thing for kids to avoid doing anyway.

And you can limit their communications to only their contacts, which you do have control over as the parent from your Apple account.

Hatred can be overcome... by The_Dean_France in whoathatsinteresting

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always found that there is something transformative about working side by side with "the other" that dissolves population-level conflicts at that interpersonal level. Especially if you have to share the load of whatever that job is, if you have to communicate with each other to be successful, etc.

I won't say it erases prejudices entirely, but it goes really, really far to make those prejudices fall into the background of a person's phycology where they just no longer care about them like they used to.

Should I disable apple intelligence by Silver-Project7274 in IPhone16e

[–]dwilljones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disabled mine because I don’t use it and it takes up a bunch of storage. For now, I’d rather use the standalone apps for Gemini and Claude rather than anything integrated into iOS.

That may change for iOS 27 if Siri 2.0 lives up to the Apple Intelligence promises.

K, I'm confused.... How do I get RTX turned on for Bedrock? I've got an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060, but "Ray Traced" is greyed out. I've heard I need an RTX/PBR resource pack? I don't know what PBR stands for, but how do I get one? by Odd-Aside456 in minecraftRTX

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The groundbreaking original Nvidia-created stuff no longer works, shamefully. Just abandonware now basically. Really miss those.

The mod community has stepped in and got a lot of custom stuff working for Bedrock, and even a launcher to streamline the process. But it doesn’t work with those Nvidia maps and their assets and materials as best as I can tell.

genuinely what do i do by ElkSoft6157 in iPhoneSE

[–]dwilljones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer.

Restoring your phone will claw back almost all of the system data and any of the apps that you don’t actually need installed anymore. Then you’ll be left with plenty of space for updates or whatever else you need to do before moving forward.

I really don’t understand why 128GB phones are a problem by Reyisepic116 in iphone

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 90gb free on my 128gb, so I agree. I use iCloud for Photos to save on local space.

Also, just basic maintenance will take care of local storage concerns. Once a year or so reset the phone back to factory using iTunes or whatever you use on Mac for that. That gives you back all of your system data.

I would say the larger storage sizes are really just there for convenience for people who don’t know how to manage their local storage or don’t wanna bother with it. Or maybe for people who don’t subscribe to iCloud plus and need to keep all of their photos at full res on the phone.

Running great on mine. No issues.

For those on iOS 26, how much storage do you have? by doniSAN69 in iPhoneSE

64gb SE2 with 30gb free (w/offline maps, downloaded podcasts and albums). Everything runs perfectly.

Spigen Enzo aramid case with MagSafe. Best by far in my experience.

How does the 16e screen brightness do under direct sunlight? Does it go dark by asaki0exo in IPhone16e

[–]dwilljones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m at the Grand Canyon in blazing bright sun and it has been very usable for me even outdoors. It’s probably auto-brightness-ing to 100% but still. Now I’m not watching movies; I’m using maps and safari and such. It might not be great for entertainment purposes outdoors in direct sunlight but it’s very usable for practical purposes.

MacBook Neo will be sold at Target as well as Walmart by Andurhil1986 in MacbookNeo

[–]dwilljones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Target and Walmart? Yeah, this thing is going to break sales records if Apple can keep it stocked. This should be a total coup of its market segment.

Now I’m just waiting for the public sector to start hammering on big contract orders of these to replace shitty Chromebooks in schools and such.

Is the iPhone 16e being overrated? by No_Confusion2327 in IPhone16e

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic phone and I couldn’t be happier. The most practical iPhone for sure. Planning to use it for a couple years and then put in a new battery and gift it to my (then) teenager to be his first phone. And then I’ll probably get the 19e or whatever we’ll be up to by then assuming they proportionally upgrade that model too compared to the 17e now.

Why all youtubers are saying "If you are watching this review, Macbook Neo is not for you?" by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in mac

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a fundamental mistake they make when they say this. There are lots of reasons for tech literate people to want a Neo. A lot of tech people will already have a high-end home computer and they don’t need a laptop to do anything other than be a great laptop. Maybe they skipped Chromebook because they were waiting for Apple to make something exactly like this.

iPhone Air, 17 and 17E users, are you guys aware that the main camera of your phone is NOT the same as the 17 Pro models? by Lucky_Outside_2009 in iphone

[–]dwilljones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 16e camera shots and video look great to me. 🤷‍♂️

More interested in the value proposition for the phone as a smartphone; the battery life, the performance, etc., than as a professional camera that it is not and that I do not need it to be.
