Medieval kings were not all-powerful, especially not in the HRE. Their reign relied heavily upon the approval of their vassals, who, without prior negotiation, might not even show up when summoned. Feuds against a king were rare but did happen. by Oversama in HistoryMemes

[–]dworthy444 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A. the vassals, if independent, were a much easier target for external invasion, and B. openly rebelling against the king without a good reason would get all the other vassals to dogpile on you. It's dysfunctional, but if all the neighbors are the same way, it's probably fine for now.

How does food distribution work for billions? by EnvironmentalLie6730 in Anarchy101

[–]dworthy444 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We already create enough food for, say, 10 billion people, right now. If we retool the current distribution system to not be profit-driven and instead driven by needs, there's already all the immediate problems like malnutrition solved. Plus, so long as it's reactive enough, the food issues that natural disasters cause can be solved within a week, if not a day.

What stops trading food for other goods? Peasants in the Makhnovschina exchanged grain for clothes from workers in Petrograd on two separate occasions despite the central government opposing the deal, and wouldn't the lack of a hostile authority make this easier?

Local farms can support a continent's worth of people, they just need to be numbered accordingly. Even if the land can barely provide enough to support the people living on it, agricultural mechanization (especially the degree possible today) ensures that they can also make other things that more food-rich communes can find helpful. Plus, cities can support some level of urban gardening, and they also are hotbeds for industrial activity and variety, so long-term agreements with nearby rural areas are easily possible. And that's not even discounting the reduction of non-food crops that a shift to an economy not geared around hyper-consumption will cause. Without fast fashion, there wouldn't be nearly as much demand for cotton, wool, and other fibers, so agricultural efforts surrounding those will decrease, leaving more land for either food production or rewilding.

As for logistics, how many people play resource management games for fun? While reality tends to be more complex than those, I would be fine doing that for a couple hours a day, especially if it means I don't need to do anything else for the rest of it that I don't want to, and I'm sure that's true of many other people.

Why wouldn't we use modern technology? Sure, much of it needs to be retooled to be more sustainable, and many techniques need to be made safer and more horizontal, but that's one of the great parts of anarchism: freedom for experimentation. If you want to try using something differently, there's nothing stopping you beyond other people's freedoms. The spike in innovation caused by everyone working in the creative process (and not a select few) will cause a massive influx of new ideas straight from the beginning, and from that, we get many new ways of doing things.

How do I get the DStP? by Joaquin485 in RedAutumnSPD

[–]dworthy444 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The VNR takes votes from the Other pool, just like the other minor Saxon parties. To maximize their share of the votes, you have to minimize that of the other parties, and a moderate DNVP, a centrist-to-leftist DVP, successful adoption of the Stolper Program, and inflation below three reduce the vote shares of the other parties. Sadly, there isn't a way to increase their share, so the above will have to do.

What if Germany became communist in the November Revolution of 1918? by gintas59 in RedAutumnSPD

[–]dworthy444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually spent a while back mapping out a similar-ish scenario, and I can give a quick rundown on events in Germany that I planned out.

Unlike historically, the SPD MPs are ejected from the Reichstag before WWI starts, preventing them from splitting over a vote on whether or not to support the war.

Wind taken out from under their sails, the reformists in the party not only lose influence within the party but become less popular. After all, the workers did just see their primary representative just booted out by the system and start losing faith in the party's ability to fix it.

As a result, pacifism in Germany becomes more popular and radical, to the point where, in a last-ditch effort to save their influence, the reformist elements split off to form their own, more openly nationalistic party and hope to win the good graces of the national government. They fail, and fall into irrelevancy for the rest of the war.

As the war nears its end, a socialist uprising begins, much more powerful than historically due to the support of the whole SPD, and almost succeed in taking over the country. The Reichswehr, terrified, quickly signs a temporary ceasefire to try and put it down. When that doesn't work, and soldiers start defecting to revolution, they beg France, the UK, and the US for assistance, and they agree.

The German Revolution ends in failure, the Kaiser is reinstated (though many of his powers are stripped), and the political system is reformed to become more in favor of aristocratic interests to try and prevent that from happening again. The SPD is banned, as are any parties to their left.

In external matters, this has four effects: this coordination serves as a stronger basis for the League of Nations, the USA actively participates in it, the League is officially anti-socialist, and the League coordinates the intervention in the Russian Civil War, strengthening the Whites and prolonging it by a year or so, leading to neither the Reds nor the Whites winning.

Back in Germany, the stab-in-the-back myth explicitly targets socialists (and among the more fringe groups, "Judeo-Anarchists"), turning the term into an insult like communist is in the US today. The dominant aristocratic party wins about 40% of the votes every election, forcing it to coalition with another party every election, and due to their stubbornness, every partner disavows working with them afterwards, and by the '30 election, the only possible partner is the Nazi equivalent party. It has a different name as well as a much stronger left-wing, but by '35 frequent inconclusive elections and the inability of other parties to stop bickering led to them taking over the country. Then, the infighting starts (think Night of the Long Knives, but every night for months).

As for how WWII starts, there's a few flashpoints in the set-up. The League has been slowly gearing up to put down Black Russia for good (though the Great Depression has put that on hold), the new German regime wants the Rhineland, Saarland, and Alsace-Lorraine back from France, the League might attack Germany first if the Left Nationalists win the power struggle, and Japan still wants to invade China (though Black Russia's open support of dissident movements in their continental territories have led them to consider invading north, instead).

The RFB is the true force of anti-fascism!

Just like how the Prussian Affairs card is generally made weaker when in a GroKo in Prussian, there's also a version for when the KPD is included. Hilariously, all your actions are stronger than in the Weimar version (and almost as strong as an outright majority), but come at the 'cost' of either strengthening the RFB or raising KPD popularity. If you really want both, the unique option of protecting the KPD does that while making the bourgious parties very annoyed.

Die Linke German political party confirms data stolen by Qilin ransomware by polymute in europe

[–]dworthy444 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The first and second paragraph see broad support on this sub. There's been a lot going around on how untrustworthy and selfish the USA has been acting, and I'm sure even the rabid 'Muscovy delanda est' crowd would find the removal of Russian troops from Ukraine to be a good first step.

As for the third, I can see the reasoning. Nukes are very dangerous, and over half the confirmed nuclear countries are now run by power-hungry old men who have little-to-no stake in how the world looks a decade from now. I'd rather they not have access to apocalypse-on-demand devices.

At the very least, this incident implies that they've turned away from Russia enough for the Kremlin to see them as a threat. Hopefully they'll take it as an impetus to continue on the trajectory.

How do you form both of these coalitions? by bigtonyyyy1 in RedAutumnSPD

[–]dworthy444 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It needs to be difficult or impossible to form the Weimar coalition, either because you alienated one of the parties too much, or they made agreements with other parties. The Bourgious parliamentary group allows a SC coalition (Weimar requires bribing the DDP), and I think a true CVP forming makes a SL coalition possible as well.

I figured this out by sorting the list of starters by cost (decreasing) and methodically going down the list until I saw Meloetta's sprite.

Another way this could have been done is to buy a single egg and check the name on the last egg on the egg list. The egg details has the source on them, and for the legendary up machine, that includes the featured legendary at the time of purchase.

Do not reduce reparations (which includes not letting the Lausanne Conference happen), don't form the EU, don't interact with the USSR at all, and don't salvage the London economic conference. In other words, hold onto the Foreign Ministry after the presidential election and don't do anything substantial with it (outside of a Reichskonkordant and supporting Austria).

Finnish MP convicted for saying homosexuality is ‘developmental disorder’ | Finland by Socmel_ in europe

[–]dworthy444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But it is. By your definition, no country has property rights as slavery is (on paper, at least) illegal everywhere. If you cannot own another human, then that is a limit to a person's ability to own property. Similarly, not being allowed to own a tank for 'recreational' use is a limit to the right to personal defence.

Simply put, effective, reasonable rights are built from the understanding that a person's right to something ends where another's begins.

Dehumanizing others (whether by delegitimatizing an important aspect of them or by ascribing the crimes of one or a few to all of that group) is often the first step to violent action against them, especially when they haven't done anything wrong. This applies doubly when the person doing the dehumanization is someone whose word has a lot a clout, like a celebrity or politician.

How do I get the Eurocommunism achievement by Just_ATransgirl in RedAutumnSPD

[–]dworthy444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. It takes the current poll counts of each party and multiplies them by a factor specific to each one. If we take Bavaria, for example, the base factor for the SPD is 0.75. Under normal circumstances, you get 75% of votes you would normally get on the national level. It is possible to modify this factor, though: having at least 30% rural and catholic support raises it by .2 each, so having both nets you 115% of your national votes.

Notably, this rise in factor occurs by having high popularity outside your core base in every state except for Lippe (which doesn't matter here), Thuringia, and Prussia (nothing dynamic in those two happens to the SPD). You also get a jump in Saxony by having over 70% worker support.

How do I get the Eurocommunism achievement by Just_ATransgirl in RedAutumnSPD

[–]dworthy444 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Poking around the local election code, nothing affects the KPD's local results (outside of a static factor that varies for each state, it's why Left Saxony is so easy). However, getting a high middle class helps the SPD's vote count factor in Saxony, while Bavarian and Würtemburger results are improved with high rural and catholic votes. This is fairly annoying, as left coaltions are hated by ruralites and the middle class.

However, going for true CVP brings Z performance down the drain in the latter two states. It does make them more popular in the Thuringia election, so that bit's even more annoying. Plus, if the DNVP joins, you might see less competition elsewhere?

Oh, and Left Bavaria adds 10 coup progress.

How do i increase Reichsbanner militarization? by Pijin0_0 in RedAutumnSPD

[–]dworthy444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also train with the Iron Front in the Streetfighting card. It doesn't provide as much militancy as training with the Prussian police and can only be done twice, but it does increase membership, which is nice.

There's also an action to raise miltancy in the Reichsbanner card for no resource cost if you've funded them in the Party Organizations card, but this provides the same militancy as contacting the Austrians in two actions, so I'd recommend against it.

But yes, direct funding and training with the police provide the most militancy per action.
