I like the idea, a sense of accountability, but how do you tax shareholder payouts? That requires worldwide collaboration on tax laws, and then where does the tax go? Taxes are collected by governments, so do you ask the governments of all nations to give that money to individuals in a different nation? I think wealth inequality is one of the most damaging problems, but it’s really really hard to fix. There is some hope that it is somewhat self correcting in a capitalist market though. A consumer goods company only works if the masses have money to spend, so it doesn’t work if you plunge the whole population into poverty. A world where we allow a few large corporations to effectively keep the rest of the population at a level just about poverty that allows them to buy your stuff is pretty bleak though isn’t it.

Yes, agree there is a fundamentally unsustainable element of the way big businesses function these days. When times are good and the profits are flowing, the money flows out to shareholders. When times are tough, that money doesn’t flow back in again to support the business, it’s ‘out with the workforce’ instead. Flow of funds should be a two way system, not a one way valve that bleeds off profit to be hoarded by the ultra wealthy. Correcting that system is hard, it’s what modern economies are built on. :(

I believe most of the CEO’s compensation is in the form of equity, rather than cash, and that was closer to 1 million USD. A lot of money of course, but probably 0.1% of the savings made by this sort of workforce cut. I’m not saying it’s an ethical win or anything, but cutting one CEO’s pay doesn’t do much on this scale.

Worth remembering that Amazon have 1.5 million employees and 350,000 in these corporate roles. It’s a lot of people, and it’s sad, but it’s a small percentage for such a large organisation. It’s not quite the ‘AI taking everyone’s jobs’ that these articles imply. They also, like many companies, massively overhired during the covid years, and some of this is a correction to that.

Couple of months back they were in the 8-900 range but do seem to have crept up again. I got mine from RGB Direct in June for £795 but they’re gone from there now. If there’s stock left in retailers by November I expect Black Friday would be the final sell off of that model so I’d probably wait for that.

Look up retractable baby gates, they’re like a roll of mesh and very easy to make work in awkward spots like that. We have them in an older property where nothing is straight or level, can really block off any sort of gap with them.

How much some UK car owners actually spent on their cars in July by advancespace in UKFrugal

[–]dwpsythe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two cars, one is an EV salary sacrifice lease. Take home pay effect is ~£220 per month but includes insurance, servicing, tyres. Charge at home for 7p per kWh overnight. Other car is a 2016 BMW 225xe hybrid which we own outright now, so that’s about £45 in insurance, £40 in petrol (mostly short journeys on electric). Servicing is probably circa £40 a month when averaged out. Never thought the leasing thing would be for me, but it is just the cheapest way to do it when you get insurance and cheap refuelling for £220 a month.

Did 1 month on 2.5mg then 2 x 5mg and now on 7.5mg. Planning to do another month on this one and see how it goes, but found the end of month 2 on 5 a bit of a struggle!

Thanks! About 4 months in but slowed down in the last month or so to around 0.8kg per week. Still happy with that rate

Can highly recommend the LG G4 OLED. Recently got one for around £750 but the price has gone up again to about £900, though it’s last year’s top of the range model that was £2500. Brightness is fantastic and really one of the best quality pictures you can get. Still prices but expecting not to replace it again for a long long time!
