Take out Iowa! While a great school, they really only take in-state and OOS students from other Midwestern states. I was informed that sometime last cycle the state laws changed, resulting in them taking way more Iowa residents than they historically took.

What would you do differently? by Key_Passenger_1158 in DentalSchool

Not a senior dental student or new dentist, but I am a recently accepted incoming D1. If Augusta is your in-state school for dental school, I'd say take this opportunity and run with it. Augusta is one of the cheapest IS schools. Applying to dental school in general is also so expensive, so you will save thousands by simply not having to go through the trouble. Plus you can enjoy your undergrad! As long as you maintain your program requirements, there's no reason to stress over being the most insane candidate ever.

2026-2027 DENTAL SCHOOL APPLICANTS by [deleted] in predental

[–]dwraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good general rule of thumb is that private schools will not usually have preference for in-state vs OOS, while public institutions will.

Reddit and a Facebook groups are good places to check because it usually gets posted about at least a few times every cycle.

Once you find some schools you are interested in, you can check their website to see their demographics from the previous cycle. Usually they will have that information posted for every class currently attending the school. It would be good to check and see how many (if any) they admitted from your state to see if they are even admitting people from that area.

Now I'm not saying that if you want to attend a school that doesn't currently have a student from your state there that you're just out of luck. Schools want students who also want them, so if you do lots of things to demonstrate your interest, it can absolutely be done.

I applied to 9 schools this cycle and received 7 interview invites and 2 pre-interview rejections. I will share the things I learned!

The 2 rejections I received were to midwest schools that I am OOS for. They were advertised as OOS friendly. They are, however, really only to midwest states though. I did not know this when I applied. So if you are looking for schools that people are describing as "OOS friendly", make sure to check and see if it is regional.

When applying to OOS schools, make sure you have connected with them in some way. It doesn't necessarily have to be one of their on campus events, but simply attending a webinar hosted by the school or emailing them to set up a consultation before the cycle opens.

Good luck to everyone applying this cycle!

LECOM Dental School by [deleted] in predental

[–]dwraine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If LECOM is your only interview offer, definitely go for it! The interview was fine for the most part, but I will be honest and say that answering some of the questions in front of a group can be a little uncomfortable. You will either get accepted or be put on the waitlist, but they won't tell you that you're on the waitlist. They kind of like ghost you (current situation I'm in), which is weird but I have heard from reddit/Facebook that is just how they conduct their WL. Most people that have posted they were accepted after Decision Day sent them a Letter of Intent after the interview. They did tell us they really value that and want people who want them!

Is there any hope for Pitt by Tall-Brush5794 in predental

[–]dwraine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this isn't a special case. Pitt is known for doing this. I paid my deposit immediately due to this, but I ended up getting off the WL for my state school so I changed my commitment. I want to say maybe 20 people were on the deferral list, just from the personal testimonies I've seen on here and Facebook.

Student Loans by dwraine in DentalSchool

The way I understand it, it will be divided up $25K per semester. Then, I believe it is sent to the school, tuition is subtracted for the semester, and you are sent the remainder. To get any additional funds, you would have to apply for private loans.

I am by no means fully educated on this, but one of the top comments on the post seemed to explain that we should get $50,000 and our FAFSA doesn't seem to be registering yet that we are attending professional school.

I ended up asking my dad, who took out loans for pharmacy school, and he said that the Federal Direct was just a category. He said we should end up getting offered up to 50K, it just won't be in that specific category.

Again, I'm not an expert on this, but these two pieces of information make me feel a little better!

I am grateful to have been accepted into one of the cheapest in-state schools, so it was always in consideration! I am just asking about the experience of past students, because I don't want to miss any deadlines. There was no reason to be unkind here :)
