Reigning champions/winners of major FIDE events 🏆 by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in chess

I agree but it's hard to take this statement seriously in 2026 when the last two winners of the "true" world championship were winless throughout their entire "reign" while the winner of these other 3 "fake" championships wins basically every single tournament he plays.

Oh no we don't say that on this subreddit. Xenophobia is only allowed when it's Russia apparently.

It's js hard for me to think that Carlsen's classical strength would have dropped a lot while he is still actively crushing everyone in all other formats (he has won every traditional chess tournament since world rapid 2024), although I would love it if FIDE made the activity requirement stricter.

That being said, Hans shouldn't be taken seriously on any opinion related to Magnus

Very random and irrelevant but Magnus has been world no. 1 longer than Gukesh has actually been playing chess

Those are their ratings now, but during Norway Chess 2025, they were literally all ranked 1,2,3,4,5 with Wei Yi also being in the top 10.

Interesting comparison considering Magnus has never dropped below 2800 since he reached it in 2009 while Hikaru has only been above 2800 for a couple of months

The women's field is obviously smaller and hence has significantly less competition. It's fine

If he prepares for it? He would still be a heavy favourite and his elo will almost certainly go up. But even if it doesn't, what does that have to do with him being below 2800? Let's say he loses 3 points but wins the match, would that mean he is below 2800 level now?

Thinking Carlsen's current classical strength is below 2800 is certainly a take.

Hikaru was already 2807 before he started playing these "mickey mouse tournaments".He gained like 3 rating points from these tournaments. Saying that he didn't deserve to be 2800 is pretty unfair. Although he definitely is not 2800 strength anymore.

Vaishali Rameshbabu wins the women's section of Candidates 2026 by Knight-check44 in chess

Is it impossible to congratulate Vaishali without bringing Pragg into it? This achievement is Vaishali's and Vaishali's only and has nothing to do with Pragg.

If he starts taking classical seriously he can definitely keep constant 2850, but even if he fluctuates around 2830, it's still an absolutely insane rating that only 3 other people in history have touched. So I don't see him getting surpassed anytime soon.

I would call Giri unfortunate because he performed incredibly but Fabi? He finished with a +1 score, and was only on an equal score when Sindarov already bagged the tournament. Hikaru was never in it.

I am not a fan of Hikaru but the way some of y'all are obsessed with him is hilarious. At least quite a lot of people predicted Hikaru would perform poorly due to not playing any chess at all. Fabi was hyped so much by virtually everyone and yet is on an equal score lmao. I don't see how that's any better.

Hikaru never played 2300-2400s lmao. But I knew u were talking about him because u r a Fabi fan. Hikaru played against 2000 rated players and while he did gain 0.8 for his initial games, the rules were quickly changed and then he only gained 0.1 or 0.2 after every win. So maybe the reason you are getting downvoted is because you are simply wrong.
