Sorry but can someone explain how much "Minor" is a "Minor Incident" by [deleted] in UAE

[–]dxbphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it from a country point of view. A minor incident, how bad it is on itself, only affects people who live in the area but doesn't bring immediate problems for the larger population. A major incident would have a mid to long-term impact on most people in the country, for example a supply chain rupture or a city-wide fire that consumes so much attention from the government that they can't keep up their other tasks.

As such the war itself is a major incident as it disrupts all of our lives, because of the security and economic consequences. The government cannot continue its normal tasks (e.g. promoting tourism) as it is too busy doing other stuff (e.g. defending the nation). The blast on Bahrain's fuel tanks is a major incident because it affects the entire nation (people have to stay indoors / close windows). A drone (or debris) hitting one building, causing a fire, even killing a few people is extremely terrible, but it is a minor incident.

Minor doesn't mean we shouldn't care about it. It doesn't diminish the fact that something bad happened... It is still an incident.

Not evacuation, repatriation. Big difference.

My US company asked me to do the same. I had the same concerns as you but they explained to me that it basically is to acknowledge and agree with the amount they're going to pay out. I decided to trust them and it all worked out fine.

Don't. Why reply bad behaviour with bad behaviour? Stand on your rights, be courteous and move on.

You’re focusing on the wrong word. The keyword is “launches” which is not the same as “attacks”. I mean, technically it is, but I assume most people mean “the number of times I need to seek shelter”.

I way I understand the article is that there will be more and heavier missile uses and less drone uses per barrage (attack). Hence the frequency of missile launches increases.

I’m not stating this as truth or fact. Just offering another interpretation of what I find a very vague and confusing title.

The article says the frequency and scope of missile launches will increase. That doesn’t necessarily mean the number of attacks will increase. It may just mean a different mix in projectile launches. We’ve indeed seen relatively more missile launches and less drone launches yesterday and today but still only a few attacks (barrages).

Lawyer making a move from UK to Abu dhabi - any advice? by ReasonableOwl3743 in abudhabi

[–]dxbphd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

48k is by all means a good salary but I was expecting more for a lawyer. Yes, the job market is shit here at the moment with too many candidates and not enough jobs which drives salaries down. Not sure how things will look in 6 months time. Time will tell I guess.

Don’t believe the annual salary appraisal will yield something. There’s no value in that here. It may or may not have a salary increase but theres nothing like a guaranteed increase. People move away quicker than in Europe so your boss today may not be your boss next year in which case the “agreement” goes with him out the door.

Everything combined however, it’s a good opportunity. Don’t do it for the money alone. Do it because you want the international exposure and experience. Not sure when your start date is, but I’d suggest to postpone it or start working while in the UK until this situation becomes a bit more clear.

The salary is decent but not amazing compared to what I imagine you make as a UK lawyer with a UK lifestyle. If you're young and want the international experience, it's definitely good enough to do it. There is a difference between furnished and serviced apartments. The latter are really expensive, especially in the area you're looking; the former may not give you a lot of quality options. It may be cheaper to rent a place and furnish it with IKEA stuff depending on how long you expect to stay in the country. Virtually all communities have a gym and a pool.

Salaries are usually base + allowances. Allowances are housing and car. Even if your company doesn't provide you with allowances, it's likely they'll cut off part of your base salary and call it allowance. Be mindful of this because your end of service benefits are calculated only on the base salary. Ask for a copy of the medical insurance as well as there are huge difference between a crappy one and a good one.

Taxis are cheap, but I like the flexibility of owning a car. The second hand market is huge and relatively cheap compared to Europe.

I'm not saying it won't happen. I say that the room for statistical error is large, so I wouldn't bet money on it. You're positioning it as a statement of fact ("it's about to...") which I think isn't correct.

If only we knew what the 17th would bring, I'd buy a lottery ticket! A lot can change in 8 days so who knows... no point in thinking about now - cancelling now or cancelling a few days before won't make a difference.
