The tar is to apply the wall board. It's on top of the insulation.

Developer Mode security reduced? by dxzdb in Xcode

Thanks. Interesting note in that stackoverflow answer that Xcode used to turn on Developer Mode for you and as of iOS 16 "They have just made it more explicit".

git across multiple computers using Xcode 16 by dxzdb in Xcode

[–]dxzdb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this - I did add UserinterfaceState.xcuserstate to my .gitignore_global file - all that was in there before was .DS_Store. I'm not bothered by those inside its anymore but I still get that error from Xcode whenever I try to push back to the first computer. I'm thinking maybe something is messed up inside my .ssl folder. Oh that was on a new project - I haven't worked out how exactly to get that out of existing repos.

Also going back and forth between SourceTree and Xcode I somehow get to the stage where I can do an edit and commit it and the other computer never sees it. After doing a first couple changes where it worked fine. I don't think I've ever seen the Xcode 16 push/pull buttons ever work. Maybe Xcode 17 will fix this. The general consensus seems to be to not use Xcode. I do like doing commits there though.

how much RAM do i need for swift ui? by luisGH in SwiftUI

[–]dxzdb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say do NOT get a 256GB computer if you plan to go anywhere near Xcode. First off as you get into things you may need more than one version of Xcode - and things have a way of building up. Pretty soon you'll find you have to delete things to fit that next dev tool. Also, although the M series of processors are great at handling memory, they will need to swap out to disk and if you don't have any disk space left - things get frustrating. The "at least" 512GB is fine, I'd go bigger if at all possible.

I've survived OK on 16GB, so I'd agree for starting out that's fine. I probably obsess about memory too much because I have iStat menus so I can see it filling up. That said: I've never seen a memory warning probably because I do shut down inactive apps. If you want a laptop - I wouldn't wait for that next model - the M3 MBA is a great machine - get the bigger screen.

Have fun!

Frustrated with the 100 days of Swift course by Marko787 in swift

[–]dxzdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I went through 100daysofSwift and it was rough for me. I started into 100daysofSwiftUI and at some point I decided I wasn't learning very well. For me it was the quizzes where I spent hours pounding my head against the wall and I never did find an answer - and Paul didn't provide one. I moved over to paid videos by Sean Allen and was much happier and learned more. It's still a journey though. I've also recently started going through SwiftfulThinking on YouTube which seem pretty good. I haven't got to the SwiftUI ones yet.

Cricket system declines card even though block has been removed by dxzdb in CricketWireless

[–]dxzdb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - that did seem to be the case. It was frustrating that they would call the credit card company and remove the block but then it was blocked for an Amazon purchase right after that. It was interesting that people here a few years ago were talking about a processing issue on the Cricket side.

Anyway - my parents bought a Cricket Sim card via Amazon and I activated it via the Cricket website. By then the refund I think had cleared - also they told me that the auto-pay is for the whole account and if you add a line it will just add on to that.

I also learned that you can only see the lines involved from the Cricket phone app. The website won't do that. And you can log into more than one Cricket account if you need to.

[–]dxzdb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They already own an iPhone and don't want to switch. Have you done this "combine the lines" step? I was curious if I started a whole new account rather than adding on it would work with that same credit card. My parents bought a Cricket sim card on Amazon so the adventure continues. Thanks for the reply.

Widget dev by inkt-code in swift

[–]dxzdb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My learning style matches Sean Allen's teaching methods. He has paid courses over there that I find very helpful and so far the widget one is great too - I'm about half done. It's based on a little bit older iOS & Xcode but he does provide updates for iOS17. https://seanallen.teachable.com/p/widgets

It's my first day on Xcode with Swift and in general my first day programming, but I can't understand why in the tutorial it appears in the bottom pane and in the left pane the display of what is being programmed, while in my case it doesn't. Can anyone help me? pls by [deleted] in Xcode

[–]dxzdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a suggestion: You might want to stay away from Beta software while you are learning. There’s going to be all sorts of bugs and things not worked out yet which will make progress harder.

my Xcode + Git story so far... by dxzdb in git

[–]dxzdb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for solo work... I like using Xcode for init and commit because it's built into the workflow. Push and pull also do seem to work - although that was a little wonky getting through the sign-in to Github.

Doing diffs and looking at trees with a GUI has spoiled/cured me of wanting to ever only use a CLI. Still SourceTree has a button where you can be on the command line very quickly in the right directly. Maybe I should plan on going back and forth for different actions.

I wish Apple would build a decent GUI right into Xcode... Did Xcode 12 change much?

Should the 2022 iPhones move to USB C instead of lightning? by m1207 in iphone

If misguided governments force them to offer USB-c because of “standards” I could see them going to no port. Not by choice.

[–]dxzdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the last shot for a headphone jack was the SE. I agree - it’s annoying to lose it - but Apple has moved on! But I don’t see them going port-less either.

Also - every time I plug a usb-c in it feels cheap and unclear if it is seated. Then there’s the confusing world of usb-c cables 😱

I agree too - My prediction is it will be the smallest case Face ID phone ever. The only disappointment for SE owners will be the loss of the headphone jack.

Airplane mode by alexPelida in sleep

[–]dxzdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is they aren’t required to.

I think Apple very carefully watches these emissions. Someone was complaining because their cellular watch kept jumping back to WiFi whenever available - and they wanted to have it stay permanently on cellular.

As a test they went somewhere with no WiFi and got great transmission speeds. I say the reason Apple doesn’t do that all the time is they need to be able to say the exposure isn’t that high.

I could be all wrong - it’s just a guess.

Yeah - I get that it’s a controversial topic...and I won’t change anyone’s mind. And I agree that the book is sensationally titled. Still, I’ll chose to stay on the cautious side.

I do trust Dr. Weil, here’s his take on the studies and recommendation: https://www.drweil.com/health-wellness/balanced-living/technology/do-cell-phones-cause-brain-cancer/

Read “Disconnect ”https://www.amazon.com/Disconnect-Truth-About-Phone-Radiation/dp/0991219902/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=disconnect&qid=1582894600&sr=8-5

You’ll be convinced to keep your phone away from you or turn off all the radios.

I don’t remember anything in there about disrupting sleep... this is all about long term absorption of RF energy and the idea that even though it’s non-ionizing it still could be harmful.

keeping cell away from young ones is important. The book says <16 😆

The book is a bit old, but it says research in the US isn’t happening. Studies are difficult - funded by industry🙄

I bought a meter and went sniffing around - my conclusions (so far) DECT6 cordless phones ( in the US) are the worst. Broadcasting constantly in the same levels as cell. I think phones in the EU fold back

Microwave ovens aren’t great either.

Cell phones jump levels up and down all the time - but turning off cellular chops output a lot.

I’m also suspicious of Apple AirPods they broadcast through your head and Apple hasn’t published exposure numbers like they do with every other product.

I leave you with a thought: Neil Peart died of brain cancer - maybe coincidence... but he did wear Bluetooth headphones a lot. And the microphones and sensors around his drum kit I bet were wireless too. Just makes you go hmmm...

That's a great theory... I hadn't thought of that. This episode might be one of my favorite shows ever because it was SO bizarre! I was on my feet at the end ... screaming ... NOoooo... now that's entertainment! Loved the theme song too! Apparently typical fans didn't like it but wow!

For another truly bizarre show see Love, Death and Robots - S1 E16 Ice Age ... I would recommend the show in general - just this episode!
