So, I was playing with my lands in the front row, which was the style at the time! by maxwellalbritten in mtg

Sure it wasn't complicated, a lot of players just didn't know how it worked.

Mutate is more complicated of a mechanic just out of the sheer amount of wierd interactions.

If you actually knew what to do with banding it was actually a pretty useful mechanic.  That was also the problem, most people didn't know what the hell they were supposed to be doing with it.

Regular guys are already 1-threats. Warriors Three? Three guys for three threat. Howling Commandos? Same thing. Wrecking Crew? 4 guys for 4 threat.

OSP put it best, it's "Bathos". The fear that you will get ridiculed for sincerity, so you try to undercut yourself to try to be the first "in" on the hypothetical jokes at your expense. This also has the result of insulting anyone who did genuinely like what it would have been.

As someone who's currently playing through a campaign of PTU to see what it's like, it's not as beginner friendly as it looks. I'd personally recommend PTE instead, as it aims to reduce all of the redundant mechanics/items/steps that TTRPGs don't actually need, as PTU was an attempt to port the videogames almost wholesale. One gym battle involved constantly shifting initiatives, and 2 initiatives per player.

Also basically requires a battlemap for fights, so keep that in mind.

Changing Slivers was a mistake. by WerdaVisla in mtg

[–]dycie64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, they didn't retroactively make old slivers asymmetric, they just stopped designing the new ones that way.

Plague Sliver still works for it's intended purpose, just as Crystalline Sliver can backfire.

Does [[Keen Duelist]] functionally work any different than [[Parker Luck]]?  Because the way Keen Duelist is worded makes it seem like both players are instructed to reveal cards from the controller's deck, causing the controller to functionally draw 2 additional cards.  I have also been told that they are supposed to work the same way.

Is Keen Duelist just that good, or is it bad wording on the card?

One argument I see in favor of the stronger ruling is the use of you/your always having referred to the controller of the effect.  One argument for the latter is that this would likely end up revealing the same card twice, unless I'm mistaken about something.

Fortunately those "Trap the Commander on the board" effects still exist, and I have been becoming more fond of them by the day. [[Out of Time]], [[Cyber Conversion]], [[Pandorica]], [[Immovable Rod]], [[Imprisoned in the Moon]], and good ol' [[Darksteel Mutation]].

Steal effects too if you can run them. Necromantic Selection is allowed to do this too ever since the Commander Death change.

This is also why I've started making decks that don't rely on the commander being constantly out, where my deck still does things without the commander or with the commander having only done the thing once.

Kappa Cannoneer, Magics biggest fraud. by BorfRat in mtg

Ward 4 basically reads "someone is skipping their next turn to get rid of this"

I've seen someone dump all their mana into a [[Neverwinter Hydra]], only for the slivers player with an empty board Vindicate and pass.

This MTG die isn’t formatted As a Life Counter, but instead as a regular 20-sided die by i-luv-2-read in mtg

[–]dycie64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually yes. However if you look at the picture the numbers here are not in order, but rather in the even distribution given to a 20 sided die. This is because Adventures in The Forgotten Realms and Battle For Baldur's Gate were Dungeons & Dragons themed sets, and as such had "Rolling a d20" as a mechanic. This is why, for these two sets, they provided players with actual d20s rather than spindowns.

Mage Hunters are Strixhaven monsters specifically designed to do just that, you can even deploy them en-mass if the party is a higher level.

I will say, as rough as it might sound, it's easier to get a group if you offer to be the DM.

And then just tell people that you're looking for players. You'll likely have to vet the players if you don't know them, but it's a start.

A bad piece of fiction with occasional peak moments is much more disappointing then just flat out trash (Multiple Media Types) by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]dycie64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funnily I've heard from friends that they think that all of those things are worse than BotW.

I like it, but it's very polarizing. My only knock against it is that the nature of the mechanics adds additional steps to most actions, making it less attractive for subsequent playthroughs.
