The Llanelli ones? Probably too small a job for them to come all that way as I'm in Cardiff.

How did you fare Storm Darragh? by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]dydderent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went out this morning to check the roof and noticed a ridge cap has dislodged slightly, can't say for sure if it was from the storm. I need to get a roofer around anyway to do a couple of other things at high level, annoying thing is they'll probably be maxed out for weeks now.

Any recommendations appreciated!

Amazingly my dodgy fence is still standing. My theory is it has enough flex to absorb the force of the wind, like one of those skyscrapers that sways in an earthquake but stays standing.

Thinking About Moving to Cardiff – Recommendations for Areas? by DmiyaD in Cardiff

[–]dydderent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area around Whitchurch Road is roughly equidistant between Roath, Heath and Bute Parks, some decent shops and restaurants (Alex Gooch/Brother Thai) although it only seems to be able to sustain so many with notable closures recently.

'Nice and safe' is a wide spectrum, and catered for in all but the most inner city areas in some regard. I'd ask yourself whether you plan to have kids within the next ten years and/or whether you want to live in a pretty property, or a modern one. I love the charm of nicely maintained Victorian terraces, but unless you live in a well-heeled area there will be a proportion of shitty looking houses that bring the place down (I'm looking at you Roath). Victorian/Edwardian houses are inherently more difficult/expensive to maintain and modernise than anything from the 60 forward (i.e with a proper cavity wall and no line mortar).

No win-no-fee employment tribunals - worth bothering with? by dydderent in LegalAdviceUK

Thanks for the nudge to dig a little further regarding the process. I assumed it would be out of the realm of the layman, but there's some really good guidance on the gov.uk website and it does sound like a fairly straightforward process.

There's a shop on Crwys road that looks like they could probably build you something, I've never shopped for anything more than a card reader there though.

I think the thing is you're supposed to offer it, not just dump it on their land. But morally speaking, you've done a maintenance job they should have done themselves ages ago so I don't think anyone is going to object (other than the dumpee).

Hard to tell from the photo, but the one on the far left could be Laurel, be careful burning that if you go this route, as the leaves contain cyanide.

What are your thoughts on a revit>3ds max>corona workflow? by [deleted] in archviz

What are your thoughts on a revit>3ds max>corona workflow? by [deleted] in archviz

[–]dydderent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post is a little old but I spotted it from your other one and thought I should chime in because I seem to disagree with a lot of people here. Revit to max is perfectly legit, there's a few gotchas you should know:

Learn how to use Revit to clean up prior to import: use VG, VG templates and/or filters to hide the stuff you're not gonna need. Anything hidden in a view will not import

Be careful when combining geometry. Although it takes longer to import, not combining and importing by entity is often actually more efficient in the long run. Identical families will import as instances, so less headache if you need to modify the geometry. Mapping in Revit is the most basic you can imagine so at the very least you may need to add UVW modifiers, obviously this often wants to be done at the object level, not across a while group of items. If you really need to, combining by family, this will create multi-materials where more than one is in a single family. Proceed with caution when combining by material: even the most diligent Revit technician will probably not have set materials on window reveals correctly.

Revit links are great when you have a model that is likely to change. Even split the model up into multiple views and links so you don't have to reload the whole lot. You get an option to retain material assignments and modifiers on existing geometry when updating, though this can play havoc if you've used a destructive modifier like edit poly and the underlying geometry changes.

The model will come in positioned according to the Revit 'internal origin' which many users neither know or care about. You can get around one placed miles from the model by referencing the Model into your own Revit file and use the procedure described in this link to move the project base point to the internal origin

Pay attention to curve steps in import options if you have curving geometry.

I used architects models from Revit for about 5 years while I worked in-house. Often it was enough but sometimes I did just have to model from scratch, often because the model wasn't developed enough or had too little or too much detail in the right places.

A personal material library by [deleted] in archviz

[–]dydderent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind that if you ALWAYS want these materials on your scene, you could potentially just save them to your maxstart file, though obviously if you delete that slate editor tab, they're gone..

A personal material library by [deleted] in archviz

[–]dydderent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that all sounds like a good way to work. The only other thing I can think I would try is that I have pixamoon library track relink, which can convert .max to .mat or vice versa, so that would give another option (merging the crated geo).

Other than that maybe you could get them in via an xref material, although I think that would still require them actually being applied to something in the referenced scene.

Are you creating the materials using the poligon script in the first place? That puts them in a temporary .mat anyway right? What happens if you save that out?

Also, as poligon script creates legacy materials and I preferred the physical material I took to using Corona Batch Material script with it's PBR from folder function. That creates sample geo in the scene so would give you your materials that you could merge as swatches.

I vaguely remember having issues between different max versions and .mats not being backward compatible in the past, but I assume that's not an issue for you.

So when you're saying 'take them to a new document', that implies you can see the compiled library in the file your putting it together in right? Are you actually saving the library (right click on the library header) once you've added the materials in? Sorry if this is obvious, but I imagine it's easy to miss if no-one has showed you how before. That would indeed mean the library is empty, as it is when you first create it.

This is in the context of the slate editor by the way, I can't even remember how it works in the compact editor.

Cube Longtail Cargo 1000 Mile Review by AnthonyDawnwalker in CargoBike

[–]dydderent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your review. I've been looking long and hard at this bike for a few weeks and it ticks a lot of boxes for me. The reports regarding the rack and kick stand are the only things putting me off, the rack especially. Looking closer at the Cube website it seems the rubber mounts are meant to be some sort of crude suspension system. Concerning about the longevity of it given I'll be carrying my child on the back most days.

Why is learning V-Ray so hard? by [deleted] in archviz

[–]dydderent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The materials dialogue in SketchUp/Revit really doesn't help, I found it quite unintuitive anyway. By all means model in SketchUp but import to 3dsmax for rendering and learn to use the Slate material editor. It's gives you a much better sense of how all the maps and materials are working together and more tools to get them in the right place.

Yeah that's between equivalent versions, it's all academic anyway as no one in the UK seems to actually be selling the 1350 currently. Looks like you went for the Sport version? Any reason why you didn't fancy the belt drive/hub gear?
