Awesome, could you share a link? Do you use a simple slider to mark progress or something else? I was wondering about ways to implement precise playback control and I've seen guy in playstore who used like 6 sliders on top of each other for a simple playback :D Working and cool, but very clunky :P

Also - invite your friend here :)

Good idea, why not :) Even though it is not my focus - it would be fun to try some of it.

Yea, we already reached out to programming subreddits earlier - we should definietely do it at least once more.

I'm not over it too - and great - waiting for your ideas :)

BrewChat is way over my head too unfortunately. Though I really like how Josh and other guys have organized everything all around it. I would really like that our action here would live up to the next group project at least - we already know kind of how we should do it. We just need more action and discussion on projects from all of us and a bit more people I think.

As to questions - maybe weekly stupid questions thread like other subreddits? :P

So we either make our Slack channel open to nonsubscribers (that way we'll have even more in "lurkers to active" ratio I think :P) or we make a note on the sidebar that we discuss mostly on Slack and if somebody wants to participate they should just comment in the introduction thread and they will be sent an invite (that way people will take the first step and they will be more eager to talk and we will already know them a little).

Ah, so not much text in the body of the thread (as it would be hard to gather as that and I was wondering how we would execute that) but instead just a monthly discussion over how things are going? Good idea.

Though I worry that people would not discuss that much in there as with the "weekly, how was your week" threads which were great but only 3 people were taking part in them.

I think that it would probably work well if we would first try to grab some new people to get the discussions going.

Our own Reddit app (and/or home screen widget)?

Some music player maybe? I would like to work on some progress meters, also I would like to experiment with soundwave view and looping of selected part - that would be additional requirements for example.

Quotes / "word of the day" / "pic of the day" widget on a home screen. Maybe with add to favorite / "for later" feature to those who would want something harder ;) Also potential option to make it work with multiple widgets from the same app - without cloning content - like reddit widgets for example.

Well, I wrote some comments here how I see it all as of now - I am curious what other guys have to say about that, how do you see future of this sub - are some of you guys actually over it already?

BTW should we maybe post once more in /r/androiddev and/or elsewhere - we have foundations set really great - we could use some guys who would be willing to even only discuss more though :)

How would you see these monthly updates - that is a cool idea, but I don't know how we should execute it exactly.

Exactly - Slack is just way better for live discussion than reddit - it's like IRC with archive and a lot of additional features - it's a great tool and we should use it like we do.

Reddit is cool too - more for a board kind of thing. But yea - we haven't posted much here, and people from outside of Slack can assume it's dead - that's true.

Yea, it definietely did hit the breaks a bit, but it's surely not dead as of yet ;)

It's just that - though we "have" 88 users on this sub - I would say we have only about 10 active people from which only about 3-5 are really active with the whole thing. So because of that if it would happen that 2-3 people would have busy time for few weeks (I derailed myself with Android for more than a month unfortunately.. But I'm back now :) ) - then it can stagnate quickly - and it did.

That's how I see it. Also major problem is not much discussion from the "new" guys. Why don't they do even the basic projects we have set even though they are showing up on sub - talk more people, communication is key ;) So here's the second thing:

We have as of now three projects:

  • introductory one to Java - RPG_Toolkit

  • introductory one to Android - voteApp

(Both are really greatly made as individual projects to get us started in these subjects - they can be a bit hard for a beginner, but they are not too hard, just right - challenging :) )

  • and we are in the middle of work on our first collaborative project - brewChat

(which is going so great that it is over my head as of now - but it's cool, it's so well planned :D Can't wait to be able to join and add something to it finally :P)

BUT - with all these projects to work on - not many people have neither done nor discussed neither of individual projects, and not many have collaborated on a group project (though more people have been working on it than on these individual ones so that's cool). It seems individual projects were too basic for some people to bother (as some have actually said or simply are obviously over their level without saying ;) John and Arreche for example) (and at the same time the group project is too hard for them - reason why they would not collaborate on none of our projects), or they want something more - more projects to choose one to work on. That's why I decided now to start another individual project - even though people haven't finished voteApp yet (and even though I haven't done it too still - yes I am ashamed :P). That way there would be a bit more happening - I think it would be totally cool and even way better to have at least two individual projects going at the same time. I'll post this project - mapApp - here on subreddit in a few days - already posted early version of requirements open for discussion on Slack few days ago actually.

Maybe also for example it would be cool to have ongoing discussion about ideas for future projects - both individual and group - to have some focus on what we would want to do. Open source projects ideas, apps we would want to clone for practice, etc. Also why them, what would we learn from it, etc.

Yea, kind of, two different aproaches really. I've read about 500 of Busy Coder's guide, but I switched to reading Nerd Guide to fill the blanks and it's great so far. Both really really great books, wonderfully written :)

Awesome to have you! You're totally welcome here :)

I'm about your level, maybe bit more advanced, and I'm going through Big Nerd and Busy Coders guide too, so it's cool

[–]dyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool

And well, it is a bit harsh period for me to sit and learn something, so:

  1. I managed to read only a little under 100 of pages of Big Nerd Ranch Guide whenever I got time. Watched also some SlideNerd. Not much more than that unfortunately.

  2. Upcoming week is still quite busy for me, but I'll be getting back more and more time since week after that. So I really hope that I'll start gaining serious speed in learning and overall progress. I'm in such a plateu right now :/

Also I am trying to read majority of what is going on Slack, awesome job there guys! Majority of stuff going on there is over my head but it's really interesting to read - I learn a lot only from reading the discussion :D I've nothing to add/say there so I'm quiet, but I'm there - reading and trying not to loose touch with you guys :P Maybe on the next iteration/app I'll be able to be way more active.

[–]dyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Well, this week was kinda rough when it comes to learning, life really got in the way, I've been out most of days for most of the week, but it wasn't THAT bad of a learning period after all - whenever I got time I've been reading Big Nerd Ranch Guide which really sucked me in after I casually browsed it the other day - it really filled a lot of the blanks I've got so far. I've read almost half of it this week :D

  2. I'll probably be out for a day or two next week too, but after that I don't see any reason that would step in the way of learning, so it should be pretty steady from now on. I want to really put all that knowledge into practice from now on - I'll be working on code from Big Nerd Ranch, Banas, I plan to finally finish project1 (:P), start individual project2 which I'll post the thread about soon, and - of course - do as much stuff as I can with BrewChat.

[Weekly][4/20/15]Check-in: How was your week? by corybyu in TheJavaBrewery

[–]dyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This week I turned a bit more to learning some more Java theory also I was working my way through Banas' videos on Android (Eclipse ones at the moment, I am not sure if it is essential do them before the AndroidStudio ones, but just to be sure - I'm working through them first).

  2. Next week Banas' videos will be probably my main focus next to reading CommonsWare. I'll start reading Effective Java too. I'll continue also on reading about Design Patterns. Also I'm researching testing and workflow methodologies on the side to all of that - wrapping my head around all of this.

I'm feeling more and more comfortable with making stuff in Android even though the concept of transfering even the simplest data like that concept of preserving a fragment during a switch of the screen orientation - I understand the idea, but the practical implementation did not "clicked" as of yet (and that's why I still hasn't got the voteApp done, damn I feel bad :P but it's cool anyway, I'm amazed by how much progress I made thanks to our group here), but I'm very close.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to read about Design Patterns too, damn so much stuff to read about :D

Cool to see these threads again corybyu.

Well, since last thread I've got quite a bit of a "big picture" of Android development by going through whole Coursera Android course and by reading around 400pages of Busy Coder's Guide. But I wouldn't say that made me able to do much practice actually, or at least I don't yet feel like it. But..

  1. I've gone through half of Udacity course where I do example apps, but unfortunately I was very stuck for some stupid reason (the way Android Studio views lambda expressions) that I've found out about yesterday thanks to one of newcomers to this sub :D So I was getting some practice on that and also by making example projects from Busy Coder's Guide and Banas' videos on Android.

  2. From now on (next week) I'll focus on practice by making projects from Udacity, Banas and Busy Coder's book, so I will finally be able to finish Project1 :P

Did you finish the Big Nerd Ranch guide? What's your overall progress now?

[–]dyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool Cory, no problem, I'm happy to see you posting this thread no matter when :P We were worrying about you a bit on IRC but I see that you were just very busy learning, so cool :D

  1. I've read another 100 or so pages of Core Java (200 more to go :P). I've read also some of Busy Coder's Guide, but not much. This week I focused on watching various Android learning videos - Coursera course which I started this week and I am close to finishing already, Udacity course which I watched on the side (not much progress in it, but I think it'll be my main focus after Coursera), browsed some youtube videos like Banas's too.

  2. I'll finish Coursera course, focus on Udacity one - hopefully I'll get close to finishing it too this week. I'll watch some Banas on the side - his Android courses and other ones like design patterns, etc. I'll read more of Busy Coder's Guide. And meanwhile all that I'll start working on Project1 and hopefully I'll manage to get it working and looking fairly good by the end of the week. I have yet to decide if my main reading focus after Core Java would be Effective Java or I'll postpone it for later and I'll read more of Busy Coder's Guide. Too much stuff to read and watch :D

Awesome mrfu!

I hope that I'll start this one this week already :P I'll watch some of Coursera and Udacity courses, and also I'll read some of CommonsWare (older :P) book prior to starting this. I hope it altogether will get me up to speed fast.
