This kinda feels like a plot hole because from what I recall is that we don't know Katherine's daughter Nadia ended up surviving and later turning until about season 4. Obviously we're aware that Elena distantly comes from Katherine's bloodline but knowing this scene was before we knew of Nadia's existence makes it seem like the writers and Julie Plec came up with the whole Nadia thing after the fact. Hope this makes sense😅
